Spill/leak container ideas?

All,

I am going to be setting up my sump, skimmer, etc, in the stand of my 175 bowfront. I was thinking that it would add a measure of 'safety' to in some way contain all of this in a tub or something. That way if something broke or leaked the runoff would simply run into this tub. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else was doing something like this and how they were accomplishing it.

I had gone on the US Plastics and found a couple of things that would work for the sump itself. Quite obviously there is nothing perfectly sized for the entire internal part of the stand, so I had also considered using something like a tarp and installing a few hooks around the inside of the cabinet to hang it from to create a 'bowl'.

Just to be clear, I understand that this would not protect me against some sort of catastrophic occurrence, but would seem to add some amount of protection for the smaller stuff, or just my own clumsiness should I spill something.

Any thoughts, ideas, comments are welcome.

Thanks.

pond linner, fold it up and around the bottom and up about 4" then staple it around the top. Works like a charm.

Interesting idea!! Have you done this or known someone who has? I have never dealt with pond liner. How think/durable is it? I would probably need to anchor it in a way that could be taken up and down as I would still need to gain access to the components in the stand.

The other alternative is to poly the inside of your stand (at least the bottom and about 6 inches or so of the sides) and silicone the corners.

I did this and my stand held 3 inches of water when I accidentally had a issue... and the closed loop flooded my stand.

I just installed shower liner in my stand, folded the corners and stapled it in a few places about 4" high it's thick and strong

Check out the bottom page 6 of my build thread (the 90 link in my signature). when I upgraded by filtration about 2 months ago, I used shower pan liner to line the bottom of the base cabinet.

(the shower pan is gray, you can see it in the pictures of the new skimmer/sump)

+1
Not the greatest picture, but the wood is 3" high, on top of the metal bracing which gives me about a 4" depth. 60" x 24" x 4" = 25 gallons. Minus a good bit for all the junk I have down there which would displace it. Personally, I just wanted something which would catch drops or bigger small spills (like 2-3 gallons).

I like your set-up. Can you come and make mine look like that? :D

I think the problem that I have is that I do not have a lip on my cabinet. The base is flat and the doors go down to the base. So I need a way to create the 'sides of the bowl' in the front and back of the stand.

I don't have a lip either, the thing is thick it will stand up by itself up to a point...

you can always add a piece of trim in front afterwards, it would look better too

Hmm, I did not realize it would be that strong. Any chance you have a picture of the install?

may times on many tanks. And used it many times on my old tank too. Works great!

I could help if you were a little closer..

you can do that... (but my two double doors open up nearly 2.5", so I couldnt)

or

(like misu suggested)
you could just add blocks of wood (whatever height you want) flush with the bottom of the door opening and use pocket screws to hold it in place.. (or any screwing/clamping setup will work)

post a picture of your base cabinet/stand and I'll sketch it in for you..

This is my first attempt at attaching a file on this site, so apologies if this does not work.

This is an older picture with only the ballasts in the stand. For perspective this is a 175 gal bowfront.

You forgot to install the sump:)

I see how it's going to be a bit harder to line it but you can install the liner higher on the sides then trim it to look right

install 1/2" or 3/4" plywood strips where the red lines are drawn, it will help support the pond liner/shower pan..

I used a bed of silicone to hold mine in place (across the bottom and along the sides)

Stopped by Home Depot earlier and it looks like they only carry a standard size (5x6) shower pan liner. Anyone know of other places that may carry more sizes or have it on a roll that they will cut for you?

I did not make it to the pond area to see if they have pond liner.

They do, a package large enough is about $30 I need to drain my sump and do this myself . I have the liner, just lazy :-)
