I picked up a GFO reactor and am about to start it up this week. I've read stories of people shocking corals and even coral death when starting. Any advice for a first time user of it? Should I use less than the recommended amount? Thanks

I would start by using about 1/4 of what your tank calculation would call for and build up gradually from there. Once you get it tuned in though, it's an awesome tool!

+1

Start slow. You don't want to strip the water too quickly. I use it as needed now. Just another tool in our arsenal.

yup just start with a little bit and add some every time u change it until you're at the recommended amount

Agree with what the others said, start slow. I have personally burned some coral going too fast. RTN'ed a 8" acro colony among others.

I just started using it about a month ago now. I am really starting to see some good changes in the coral at this point. Do start slow but that has been covered.
