Starting my first CUBE! 27gal

Hey all, I just moved into my apartment at school, and lucky for me they allow small aquariums! So I'm starting a 27 gal cube. Here's the plan:

27gal marineland tank
black wood stand
glass canopy
20" 4-bulb t5HO Aquaticlife light
Fluval HOB filter
Nano Koralia powerhead
40lbs sand/crushed coral pieces
30lbs live rock (premium)
seagrasses

livestock:
1x bluespot jawfish
4x banded pipefish OR 4x pugnose pipefish
1x skunk cleaner shrimp
2x naked ocellaris clowns
20x various hermits

1x blueberry gorgonian
1x yellow finger gorgonian
2x purple brush gorgonian
1x colony of GSP
3x-5x starter frags of zoas
5x frags pulsing xenia

Questions:
Does my livestock list work? I was going for a docile group.
Do I NEED a skimmer? I've never used one before, but I have had problems with algae.
Are these species of gorgonians hard to keep? I've got an unknown gorgonian in my 75 that seems to be thriving.
Any other suggestions are welcome!

You don't need a skimmer but it is definately a good piece of equipment to have. If you choose to not have a skimmer just make sure you keep up with your water changes. Are you using RO/DI water? If not that could contribute to the algae growth. What is your lighting cycle? That to could make for algae problems.
 
yes I use tap water. I know I should be either buying water or using an ro/di unit. But if the algae is only aesthetic, it doesn't really bother me that much. My lighting cycle will be (I don't have the light yet) 6 hours a day with one of dawn and one of dusk, plus moonlight LEDs
 
tap water is horrible! i have a 5 stage rodi that needs new filters and the di canister froze in the garage and cracked, but if you want to put new filters in it, you can have it free of charge. its a filterguys unit

yes I am a poor college student, ha. Thanks so much for the help. I'll PM you when I'm heading towards home and can stop by your way.

And I've taken care of dwarf seahorses before, so I assume pipefish can't be that different as far as care and environment. My lfs says they will outgrow the 27, but that young ones might last 6 months in there, so I'm trying to decide if I really want to switch fish out every six months. Maybe I'll go with a nice pair of yellow kudas instead. Pics to come, I bought the light today. Sold my wii so I only ended up spending $85 on the 4 bulb T5HO+moonlight aquaticlife light. yessssss
 
This is a nice tank i have 2 of them i just drilled the back of both of mine.

I think the other guy is right a screen mesh would help a lot i made one for mine to there is a guy on here that sells a clear mesh for cheap.

I got a 15 foot x 7 foot piece of black mesh though for cheaper same size holes.

It will help keep your ph up if you ditch the glass tops though and keep your temp lower.


Post some pics i would like to see it.
 
I'll post pics when I get home. Rock should be here today or tomorrow. I'm gonna nix the pipefish and horses, maybe just go with the jawfish and clowns for now.
 
BTW im going to go ahead and tell you that you will not need 5 frags of xenia; trust me on that :D

Edit: BTW I also have plenty of very healthy long polyp'd pinks that Id be willing to give free If u wanna come pick them up.
 
Thanks guys, but I've got a boat load of Xenia at home. Think I'll keep it away from this tank. The cycling process is going well. I got an 8" gorgonian on the rock I ordered, but I don't expect it to make it through the cycle
 
As for the Gorgo's being hard to keep, I've personally never tried them because I've heard they are quite difficult to keep. Some people just have freak luck though, like me with my mandarin that will eat anything that goes in the tank.

Yeah I've got one in my 75 that is flourishing. Don't know what I did though.
