Is it normal to have corals that have a strong odor. I am fighting a dinoflagellates invasion and while trying to clean off some of the stringy stuff I have noticed that some of corals have a strong odor, or is that the dino stinking.

Yeah, the smell of acropora is not particular pleasant but it's not as bad as cleaning skimmate. It's funny to me I know how a 2 or 3 inch frag smells from across the living room.... makes me wonder what a beach like this smells...

The more stressed a coral is, the more it will stink. It's the smell of coral toxins.

Mushrooms, Xenia and Leathers really stink. Soft corals tend to stink more than hard corals, softies rely more on toxins as a defense, since they don't have skeletons.

one thing i learned in my beginner stages of sps corals, youll know when one has died without looking at the tank. it can make a whole room stink.
