I noticed this small liquid sack attached to the base of my power head. It feels very squishy and it didn't instantly kill me when I touched it. It's not bubble algae. Any ideas what it is? It's resting against the power cord in the middle of the frame, a little smaller than a dime and not uniform in shape.

When I google "Liquid sack" my own picture comes up first with no other promising leads. Any ideas how else to research this thing?

Would JennM know? I've seen some posts where she has helped others when it comes to fish diseases. Maybe she can guide you in your research efforts.

I hope this has been helpful.

That is a great photo of what you are trying to get clarification on "what it is?"

It doesn't look like anything, so you're not blind Jenn. It has the shape of a little wheel of cheese. Its up against the power cord on the lower base of the powerhead. It seems to allow algae to grow on it. I just noticed it yesterday so IDK how fast it grows.

JennM:

I believe it to be what I'ved circled in attached photo. Frantz, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have no idea what that is. Looks like part of the mounting bracket.

I can see it...Kinda...Almost spiderwebby due to the algae. You say it grows fast ? When did you notice it? I believe it is the beginning of some sponge growth but I could be wrong.

Might be Botryocladia skottsbergii or maybe a different algae that is confused with this species. I believe I have the same thing as you and looks more like the pix in this thread http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2115063">http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2115063</a>

When you break the bubble, it will have jelly inside if it is the same as mine. I think they are quite beautiful HOWEVER they do spread like good 'ol fashioned Valonia but not quite as aggressively. If you don't want them all over your tank, I would pull the powerhead bracket out of the tank and remove the bubble over a sink.

That seems like the best thought so far. Thanks Schwaggs. I'll just observe and research for now unless someone knows better.
