what is the background on the back of the aquarium called? More importantly where can i find some online to fit my tank and what section is it under. I have checked a few fish stores and they havent had any my size for a while? i need some that is 26 inches deep

Black paint.....you can use spray paint.....but I've found that gloss enamel black paint works well....dries pretty quick.....need 2 coats but looks pretty good IMO.....but to each his own....

I have always seen them refered to as aquarium backgrounds. I imagine the 26" deep thing would be hard to find. Maybe bigger and cut it although I also am a fan of just painting it.

first what is this +1?
i would paint it but i have it set up against the wall... not sure i could paint it neatly against the wall :(

We refuse to help you buy one...

We think they"re tacky, there, I said it....

+1 = in agreement... me too!

We'll find you some other options Jeremy..... Don't go out and buy a reef background quite yet........

How big is your tank? Dimensions?

You can always get a large sheet of black poster board from walmart.....cut to size and use double sided tape.....just try to make sure the tape isn't in view and be good to go....

If it is too close to the wall to paint then just buy Aquarium background that is black and overlap them since you cannot find one 26" tall. Another idea is to get a piece of black 3/16 or thinner acrylic and use electrical tape to tape it to the back glass.

I didn't do anything with my background except let it get covered in coraline. Now you can't even tell it's not painted.. :D

If you want a background though I would just suggest some krylon paint.

I'd try googling aquarium backgrounds and see what you come up with. Obviously, you can see that most of the people on here are fans of the painted backs (me too). Since your tank is already set up and is against the wall, Chris's (fishscales) idea was great, or you could go with poster board. Poster board would need to be replaced every once in a while, though, as it would absorb moisture and probably attract salt creep. If you don't like black, you could try other colors. I think blue looks nice with a fish only tank.

WOW, i never thought this question would spark as much attention as it has. When i asked about a background i wasnt refering to some sort of magic theme.. i am looking for a solid color black or blue not sure what color. I didnt want to have to tape to sheet together as i would of perferd it to just be the correct fit to begin with. As far as painting it i am up for it, but not sure if i would like black and dont want a permanent solution until i have figured out what color is better for my tank (blue or black) with that said i think i just amy try to squeeze my arm back there and paint it anyways... worst case i have to repaint my wall right..lol

i painted mine with barely enough room for my hand with a crappy brush and some black paint, when the paint hits the glass it smoothes out beautifully, no brushmarks or anything. It looks like hell if you see it from behind though lol!

I use a vinyl type sun shade from kwickshade:

It is not totally opaque (doubling it helps but if your wall is not white a single layer may be acceptable) and you will have to cut it to fit but you can get it in any length you want at 32" wide. You will have to contact them to purchase a length of it though as their website does not offer it directly any more. It sticks relatively well to acrylic as well as glass without adhesive.
