i started getting hair algae on one of my rocks, and took it out scrubbed and washed it in my tub. after a few days it turned bright white, lol.


how long til my just killed rock comes back to life, if it's surrounded by healthy LR???

also, can i put two different leathers next to eachother??? i think one is just your typical leather and the other is a green toadstool.

Second question: I think you can, but be mindful that leathers get large so they will need separating if they grow well. I don't think softies fight like stoneys.

How long does it usually take for coraline to develop?
I have a few live rocks in there and my tank has been established now for over 4 months and im seeing very little but def have some hair algea....

As above said, you can put the leathers side by side, but they grow huge, my toadstool started the same size as the one you got from me and after 2.5 years it's 5 inches across.

How much rock are we talking about? If it's a sizable amount, this might send you into a mini-cycle.....

What percentage of your live rock is it?

it's about 35% of my LR...lol. it was asingle piece, but that single piece was a giant. and no i did not get an ammonia spike. my trates are still right above 0.

I've got T5's on a 30L and I started developing coralline algae about first of the year (sporadically throughout the tank) I got the tank in August but it was previously established..

when I got the tank there was no coralline to be found anywhere..

Continue to monitor the ammonia. Depending on your system, that's enough to create a mini-cycle. It might take several days to a week for the ammonia to build

Coraline growth is also dependant on the tank temp. I get MUCH more growth at 80 degrees than at 76 degrees.

the rocks already went from white to brown though so that's a good sign i think! these mights must really work well .


i also keep them on 12 hours straight haha.

In regards to coraline growth, my 48 watt CF lighting grew more in a matter of weeks than my 150watt MH fixture has grown in months. Under CF lighting, purple and red coraline quickly covered bleached out dead live rock within a month or so.
Under the 150watt metal halide fixture, I've only grown green, brown and black coraline (in that order btw) in almost 5 months.

It's interesting that the purple coraline that the CF's grew has not diminished in color under the MH, and has maintained it's purple color.

Yea next time use tank water, scrub with a tooth brush gently it comes right off, then rinse with fresh tank water. And your done. Always use tank water to clean living items from the tank thats going back.
