Substrate

I would like to use a black substrate in my new set-up any suggestions from guys as to which may better than the other would be greatly appreciated!

If you are anal about the tank bed being pristine all teh time.. dont lol. I used black sand in my old 90. Even with 2 mp40's, I still got white sediments all over. I couldnt maintain the crisp black look . Looked like white poo all over my tank...

I'm not sure. But for teh first week I wanted to make love t my tank every time I came home. The black makes your coral pop in color.... until the dirtiness ... So if you are meticulous about cleaning you're tank, it's beautiful. If you look up "Futureinterest" i think was his name, you'll see a beautiful tank with black sand.

I just decided to go with black sand, picked up 6 bags of Hawaiian Black from Tim today. I did a search on here and on RC for "Hawaiian Black" "Black Sand" and a few other combination's for some research. Do that and you'll get all the opinions you can handle. I decided on Black because after looking at some other tanks i really liked the look. If it requires a little more maintenance then, for me, it's worth it.

Nate I've got black sand and really like it. Although the caribsea Hawaiian black has some pretty large pieces though.

Yeah I know Dave "Acroholic" tanks look awesome! This what has inspired me to do black sand in the new setup.

Collin when you decided on the Hawaiin did you consider any others, like tahitian moon I think it's called?

I did not do tahitian moon because it is magnetic and will stick to mag floats and such.

Now there is a seachem called grey coast never tired it or seen is so no verdict on it.

The Hawaiian Black is Arag-Alive right? I've used their products in the past, liked them, so I may have to go with them again I guess.

I agree. Dave's tank looks great and he has not vacuumed it even once. Great coraline growth on the substrate is the only thing to be seen.

Yep, I'm going black. Going to do large/coarse substrate in the front 25% of the tank then do a finer black sand behind it. For sand sifters and other creatures that prefer smaller granules. (Not too fine. Don't want sand blowing everywhere.)

And don't forget the blue clove polyps growing on parts of the substrate as well!
