I just placed an order today for 2 MP10w ES powerheads and was wondering which is the best mode to run it at for a reef tank. I'm putting it in my 60 cube which is 24" all ready. I was planning on having one on each side of the tank. I wanted to get a third for the back but that won't be possible due to the fact that I built my cube with a built in sump on the backside like the bio-cube. So do you guys think 2 MP10w ES will be enough for my tank? I also have a K4 evo that I was thinking on putting on the back wall to get flow from 3 direction. I want to keep all SPS on my rock work (about 60lb) and have LPS and poly's on the sand bed. Which mode do you guys think would be best for my coral and do you think the way I plan on setting up the powerheads is a good configuration?

Thanks in advise. All advise and comments are welcome.

I do not know from personal experience, but the NTM mode seems to be pretty popular. I think that should be plenty of flow even if you had to crank them all the way up. What is your return pump gph?

Tagging along....interested.....some of these in my future as well.

tagging along, i ordered an mp10 last night and was wondering what modes people acutally use. it seems like a multitude of possibilities

I have a mag. 7 as a return pump. I also have a slip lock line on the return bulkhead.

I would say you are set. Between the mag and the 2 mp10s, you could probably make a small sand storm. If you want to upgrade, LMK and I'll take the Mp10s off your hands.

LOL, can I enjoy them for a while? I still haven't even received it yet. It should get here on Thursday. I've been talking to the people at AquaCave all day today changing my order. Removing and adding stuff (good thing it didn't ship out yesterday). I got suckered into getting the MP10w ES. I'll be running 2 MP10w ES on each side with the mag 7 return pump and a K4 evo on the back of the tank. I would have gotten a third if there were a way for me to add another one on my back wall.

So you can only do NTM with 3 units?

Thats what I was afraid of, but I can still set it to that option though correct? The difference is that I just won't let the wave affect from the back wall right? Can I put my K4 evo on the back and hook it up to my reef keeper 2 and set it on the wavemaker option from there? That way the K4 will chime in a little to help out? Worth a try or is it useless?

im not sure if you can or not. And if you are plan on using the wave effect of the RK, be weary it will add more stress to the tank. I know you built it but its just something to take into consideration. I run two mp40's on my 150 and two k4's on the back wall. The two mp40's on reef crest mode and the k4's run all the time(regularly) exception night mode with my RKE.

I usually run on lagoon mode, just cause I have a 14g. But for a 60, I would probably recommend reef crest and you will be able to turn them up pretty high if you are going for more sps.

When you say the k4's will stress the tank. Do you mean: stress=boom?

Edit:

Yeah, I plan on having this tank being a SPS dominate tank.

It advises you in the vortech book to check with the tank specs as it will add additional stress to the seams of the tank. Id advise talking to someone like chris at fish scales or someone else with more knowledge about if the tank can handle waves

Wow thanks for the info. I never new that powerheads put stress on your tank. I'll have to do some digging now.

I have two in my 45 cube. I run the old one on reef crest at 100%, and the new one on Nutrient transport mode at 80%.

Often, I switch things up a bit too, for some wave action or pulse.

I'm guessing your tank is still holding with no problems? Now that I hear this may stress out the tank, I'm kind of worried.

No problems. It is a Marineland cube, if that matters any.

:D that sounds good right there. I have an acrylic tank that I built myself. Do you think acrylic will hold together better then a glass tank?
