I have had 2 damsels and 1 goby jump out of my tank. Has anyone else had this problem? If so,what's your solution

Or glass - lots of fish are known jumpers and it will keep happening as long as the top on your tank is open air.

I'm worried about my metal halide burning through a lid or egg crate...it gets pretty hot

How close are you halides to the tank? I never had any issues when I ran halides, but they were 18 inches above the tank.

6-8 inches is definitely close for a metal halide.. do you not have temperature problems in the tank? How warm does the water get? Im assuming the MH is a 150w

My temp goes up about 2 degrees when the metal halide is on. And it's a 250w

Well - you could do glass or raise the light. Otherwise, I can't think of any real solution.

The light shouldn't heat up your cover too much because the bottom side of the cover is going to be cooled by the water.

Carpet surfers are a bummer.

Do you know why they might be jumping?

While some species are more likely to become crispy critters than others, if you're having a bunch of fish bail out on you, is there aggression in the tank? Some other bully fish pestering the jumpers til they leap to their demise?

A lid or cover will help, but I'd also be looking for a cause.
