Tank volume: 200gal

I'd like to optimize a Sump so that I can get to fit inside the stand (48"L x 36"W x 36"H) and has more benefits for the tank

Option 1: custom Refugium Sump 42x20x20 (70gal)

Option 2: run Sump & Refugium separately
Sump dimension: 36x18x18 (50gal)
Refugium dimension: 24x12x18 (22gal)

Which option is better and why?

just downloaded & played around with Google Sketchup & sample demo.

I like the second plan. Could even use a 30deep for the fuge. You would not need to raise fuge either if you drilled the sump lower than the fuge for the inlet. Use 2 screens on a T on the return in the fuge. Less room for clogging/error

I like option #1.

Having 2 sumps negates the redundancy features of that are built into the single sump.

Also, we really need to have a sketchup tutorial outlined on the forums. It's ridiculous that you're able to draw that up so quickly and easily.

I change the plan around. I would go with

Refugium Sump: 36"x18"x18" (50gal)

Small tank (36"x12"18"): divide 2 sections.

section 1: 24"x12"x18" (22gal): frag tank. If need, I would convert to second Refugium</em>

section 2: 12"x12"x18" (11gal) Top-off water</em>

with this plan, I have more space left (36"Lx18"W) for external skimmer, calcium reactor, etc.

So the stand would have doors in front & sides so that it's easy to access

Here are some guideline, it's pretty good
