40 gallon sump I was planning to use I find I can't get under cabinet. Now I'm looking for plan B. I have 2 -20 longs one is partitioned for a sump and I used it with my 90 the other has nothing done to it. My quandary is how to work these together into a sump/refugium I'm quite certain the glass is tempered so drilling is out. Anyone have any experience or ideas on how to make this work

Usually sides aren't tempered. I've plumbed 2 acrylic sumps together - drill both below the intended water line, put bulkheads and connect with PVC and UNIONS! (You may want to take them apart later, without cutting the PVC, so unions matter in this application).

The water will find its own level between the two vessels.

Jenn thank you for your response. The bulkhead idea is what I wanted to do but not sure if the glass is tempered. I noticed a sticker on an old 55 I have stating tempered glass so I assume it means all glass. I'm assuming smaller inexpensive glass tanks use tempered glass. Is there a way to tell if glass is tempered.

You can connect them with one bulkhead but have to put the gasket between the two tanks.

it may require two gaskets if the trim on the 2 tanks are thick

Put glass bit to it if it shatters it was tempered. Seriously really no way of telling without contacting the maker or just trying it. :)

Edit: The sunglass method doesn't work by the way.

Agree with grouper therapy...to my knowledge, there are very few tanks with tempered side panels and they typically have markings affixed inside the trim indicating it. If these are All-Glass/Aqueon aquariums,
a> is a list which shows the ones with tempered bottoms, but none have tempered side panels.

thanks for the link I believe that answered my question on the glass, now I have to get a drill bit to drill a few holes.
