I bought a standard screw in light socket for the sump last week and am woundering what would be the best light to put in it? Im trying to grow algea in the sump. Will this work or am I going to need more powerful lighting?

you will probably need some pc's or flourecent bulbs for algae. I would get the pc's but there more expensive.

You can go with a flood light or normal output flourecents. Just make sure the bulb is in the 6k range.

This is my first time with algae, too, and Bob suggested the following to me:

19W (75W equivalent) spiral 6500K PC bulb (made for Home Depot). It fits in a regular light socket. I got one that clips right on.

Hope that gives you another idea!

Those screw in PC bulbs are great.

You can find them at Wal-Mart as well. The last time I was there, they had a 2 pack somewhere in the $8 range IIRC.

Everyone may want to check out this page:

Cheap, easy, and the difference between the blubs is staggering. I use this light for my refugium.

these bulbs are great i forgot about them. They are also good for normal house hold lamps because they last like 10 times longer or something crazy like that. Good luck with your algae guys..!!!!

I uswe those in my fuge and the chaeto has went from a base ball to a basket ball in three months!
