Im swapping from a 20 gallon to a 55 gallon, my question is, does the 55 have to cycle or by putting my sand, 50+ lbs. of live rock, water,, and filters in it make it ok?

you will likely have very very little spike if at all....IMO

I wouldn't even bother using the sand. Disturbing the sand bed will release all the nasties and could cause a spike. Get new sand, save 50% of the water, and reuse your rock and filters, and you should see no spike.

awesome, glad to hear this as i am very excited and probally would have died if i would have had to wait 2 months for a cycle, thanks for the fast responses

I just went from a 55 to a 120 about a month ago and had no spike on anything. I did basically what you said you were going to do. I did use all the sand from the 55 and used it like a top coat over the new sand. I made up saltwater and rinsed it first before putting it in the 120 to help get the crud out. Siphon the water out of the tank before you disturb the sand and discard whatever water is left behind. You can follow au01st's advice and it'd be a lot easier. Just keep a few handfuls of the old sand to "seed" the new sand.

I transfered 2-75 gal tanks,1-30 gal,and 2-10 gal(rock,sand,water) into my 240 gal and didn't have a spike.
But,that doesn't mean you won't?

all that into a 240 probably just looked like a water change to the bio...lol

We recently upgraded a 30 to a 45. Used existing water, rocks, plants, but not the substrate. We did move the fuge with a DSB untouched, however.

We had a one day spike and then back to normal water parameters.
