Decided to change my setup.. Having a 110g in an apartment is just too much work and not enough space. Anyhow planning on downgrading to a 40 gallon breeder. While making this change, I am toying with the idea of adding a remote DSB. I have a few questions about this process. My 110 currently has about 2-3" of sand, which has been running almost 6 months. Can I just transfer all of the sand from my current DT to my remote DSB tank, or will I have to start with new sand. I am trying to make this switch without impacting my current livestock. Here is a quick sketch of what I was planning.
Also... with a RDSB, can I still have a shallow sand bed in my display tank for aesthetics?? Any information on this topic would be greatly appreciated, as it seems everybody has their own opinions regarding sand beds.

Edit: Pic was too small

Edit: Well the pic wasn't large enough, but just curious as to the order of the setup as well. I was thinking display tank to remote dsb to sump back to DT..

You can reuse the sand but I would wash it first there will be a lot of build up from the past 6months
I don't know how the DSB will help you as they require a lot to maintain and can become a ticking time bomb that could nuke your tank using something like matrix or live rock in the sump would be a safer alternative to a dsb
On most 40b systems with a light to moderate bio load the live rock and 10gal week wc is all that's needed to maintain a healthy system sand is not a must

So far I have received the same feedback from multiple sources: AVOID the REMOTE DSB...
So when transferring from 110 to 40, will using about 1" of new live sand in the 40 have any impact on my corals/fish? I would like at least some sand because IMO it just looks better
