T-5, mh, leds or a combo?

I have a ATI fixture t5 on the back side of my 180,and two hydras on the front. To soon to tell on how the sps and lps are going to do.Will get back in a few months.

I like leds. I have a mixed reef right now and it looks awesome.

I'm running LEDs on my mixed reef. I'm thinking of adding T5 supplements. So far I am having very good growth and colors are good.

My favorite light right now is T5. I've been running them for 4-5 years now with what I would call good success.

I've done DIY LED, MH, PC, and my pick is T5.

The lights maintain a high growth rate, relatively low heat, and allow me to dial in the color I want.

Thats why I personally like T5.

T-5 HO (ATI fixtures and Bulbs) or MH. Either with LED supplements for highlights and color.

I have a mixed reef and I use 2 x 250 watt MH and 4 x 54 watt T-5. This combo is tried and true and I have gotten great growth over the years. Great coloration too

imo 20k halides are a great stand alone bulb. I don't feel like they need and supplemental LED for blue.

Thanks guys keep them coming.. here is my reasoning for asking.. im lost as to what I want to run on my breeder. Here is the list of what I have wrong with each light..
Pc= crap all around and out of date..
T5= replacing bulbs every year is pricey
Mh= from what I hear cause heat you have to replace them two times a year and pull more watts.
Leds= high cost off the rip

Now heres my list of things I have heard good about each light.
Pc........ cheap lol..
T5 good growth pull less power good colors

Mh= great growth
Leds= way less power pull no bulb replacing for a few years and no heat..

So im stuck lmao. But guys keep your setups coming and tell me why you picked them

I've never heard of replacing MH twice a year. Once a year is more like it. I like mine I'm staying with them as I've seen time and time again peeps on here with years under their belts go led then right back to MH. Heat has never been an issue for me. I run a small in canopy fan across the top of the water in the summer.

Your pros and cons are pretty spot on. Depending on the Halide bulb, replacement every 6 months is recommended. And about a year with T5. The cost of replacing 6 T5 is about the cost of 2 good halide bulbs. I have used both Halide, T5, and made one of the first LED fixtures seen about 7 years ago. I went back to T5. The pros outweigh the cons of everything else. I do like the shimmer of a halide though. :)

Oh one thing to add tot he list the what I still do not think that LEDs put off enough UV. I put a UV meter up to a premium LED fixture with Jeremy at SEA Atlanta. It registered nothing.. Nada.. The UV bulbs did not measure any UV.. So that killed modern LEDs for me...

Smaller tanks Id go with LED's

Big tanks I go with halides and t5's or LED's as supplemental lighting unless cooling is a big problem in the summer.

Once you go LEDs you never go back :-) I love my multicolor LEDs. I wish kessil would come out with a multicolor light.

Not sure I agee with that. I have noticed several threads on this forum and others about folks retuning to MH or T5’s after switching to LED’s. I’m adding my name to the list kind of. I had some Acros under a Reefbreeders value units and thought that I loved the colors but didn’t see much growth. This tank also had many zoa’s and palys that grew at a good rate and had amazing coloration. About 3 weeks ago I moved a couple of SPS corals to a new tank using ATI T5 unit. In just 3 weeks I have seen some decent growth and coloration. One of the corals I moved was a Tyree pink lemonade that has started to change from a lime green to yellowish pink/burnt orange coloration. Similar results with some gorgonians I moved at the same time.

I think I’ll keep the T5’s for my SPS dominant tank and leave the LED’s for my Zoa and Paly collection.

Only posted one.Its the 3rd one.I am using AI hydras,or should i say im using ATI T5s.I am afraid to take my ATI fixture off, because it will grow sps like no tomarrow.I am not sure about the Hydras.Time will tell. And even if they are bad,i will say it.
