my tang fins are damaged. two weeks ago my clown i've had for 7 years came up missing, had me thinking i may have a mantis. the only fish having this issue is the tang. doesnt seem stressed, eats fine and there are no aggresive fish in the tank. i tried looking and using a trap seen nothing, and i here no clicking sounds.

Are you able to post a picture?

One of the symptoms of HLLE (Head and Lateral Line Disease) is erosion of fins. Jack I think you've seen my "rescue" tangs - those are pretty extreme scars from long-term HLLE, but it begins as little "scallop marks" that are often mistaken for bites.

I'm certain this is a long shot, but long term symptoms of leaking voltage is a deterioration of the webbing of the fins, which can look faintly like bite marks.

Just throing that out there....

I dont know how it could be HLLE. No leaking voltage or at least no signs of it and all the other fish are fine. And my water quality is good. I do regular water changes.

That's kind of where I was going with it - as a *possibility*. If there's no voltage (did you check with the heater actively heating?), fish get a varied diet with lots of greens and water quality is good, then it can possibly be ruled out and look to other possibilities such as a crab/mantis or whatnot. It's just unusual for one of the larger fish in the tank to come down with shreds if there's a hidden predator.

The missing clown *could* be chalked up to a predator, and I've only seen one or two instances of HLLE in clowns (horrid water quality over a LONG time frame) but usually they don't show signs of it at all but tangs and angels come down with it first.

A picture would be very helpful - I've learned to recognize the differences between mechanical injury and erosion - sometimes it can be really obvious if one knows what one is looking for, but sometimes it's pretty subtle - especially in the beginning stages of it.

Most mechanical injuries will heal completely if there's no secondary infection. Early HLLE can be reversed if the cause(s) are corrected quickly before the scarring becomes too severe.

In the case of my "rescue" fishes, they were exposed to various ills for long periods of time, and the progression was beyond complete reversal by the time we got to them. At this time they are free of the condition but they are permanently disfigured.

I have not checked the heater and i will try to get a good pic. so you can tell me what you think. I'm going to replace the powerheads because they are old but they were the most recent thing added to the tank but it could be the heater to its old aswell. Thank you for your time and i will get a pic. up as soon as possible.
