Ok I'm setting up my tank again after a five year hiatus and I had some questions. My tank is a 150T (48x24x30) with one inch bulkheads. My return pump will be a triton 5 (1250gph). How do I rate the overflow vs the return pump and how much can you actually restrict the pump with a ball valve before it might damage the pump? I know I have seen some charts on this before, but can't seem to find them now. I want to take a more slow and deliberate approach this time around and not rely on luck quite as much. My other question is would this pump would be too much for the overflow could I plumb it to run my skimmer and my uv sterilelizer?

It's a 30in stand I meant to include that. it's a single corner overflow. I have always used mag drive pumps and I actually don't know much about the tritons, but I got a good deal on it so I hope it does ok.

You can restrict flow from the pump with a ball valve without damage to the pump. But, a better way is to tee off of the return line back to the sump with a valve in the branch line so you can adjust how much water gets diverted.
