Ok, so I can't afford my BIG tank yet, but now I have an opportunity to upgrade my 55 to a 75 (and will finally have room to add the sump, giving another 20ish gallons to the system). With this comes a new better skimmer, and room for a fuge.

I've been thinking about the best way to do this, and thought I'd run it by the hive mind for potential problems/ideas.

After resealing and generally cleaning up the 75 (and repainting the stand), I plan to set the tank up empty across the room from the 55.

Get it running at proper salinity and temp, with new sand.

Add a small amount of old sand, and a few non-coral-ed rocks, and some base rock I'm getting from a friend. Run and monitor until any kind of mini-cycle either happens or it becomes apparent that it's not happening.

Transfer the rest of the critters.

Pray to appropriate deities that nothing dies.

(I don't have 2 sets of lights, which is why I need to move everything mostly at once.... sigh.)

If you have the ability, then I'd get the new tank up and running, add a cup or two of the old sand like you were planning and seed the base rock with some of your available (read - non-coraled rock) and let it run for a few weeks. The longer the better to be honest.

I highly doubt you'd get much if any cycle with this type of move, and definitely not one you're going to be able to test for. With seeded sand and base rock seeded with cured live rock, there wouldnt be anything to cause a cycle.

Once its been running for 3-4 weeks, just transfer everything and you should be good to go. Run carbon as insurance for sure.

If you aren't planning to add uncured rock, just set the new tank up with new sand and move everything over, including your old water. When you move your rock, your biofilter will go with it, so there shouldn't be a new cycle. It would be just like moving a tank, or tearing one down to rescape.

That's kind of what I'm hoping, that there shouldn't be much die off since nothing will be out of water more than a few minutes really
