Tanked - animal planet

of course. In the last episode they built a 35 foot long tank for a vegas casino. It was insane.. I just wish they did more to show the full system, especially filtration and lights. I understand the general public doesn't care about that, but it would be nice if they had content on the website to show additional build info and videos.

I would also love to see an episode where they go back and visit some of the tanks a year or so later. I'd be curious to see some of the individuals that bought tanks to see how they maintain them and how their livestock faired. I'm assuming many had to get a maintenance company.

I love the show. Not so much for the tanks they build (most do not appeal to me) but the interaction between them. LOL I wish they did a little better job of explaining that a lot more goes into setting up and maintaining these tanks then they do. This year is better than last year but they still mislead a lot of people I think. There is another one on DIY Network that I think is better at showing the whole picture but I haven't seen it yet.

show had potential, but they made it a stupid reality type show, never show anything thats actually interesting and the people its based on I want to punch. So its just like every other show on TV.

I agree with kirkwood and rdnelson99. more behind the scenes explainations on lights and filteration.

And... what show is this?

Agree. The two guys on the show make it unwatchable.

Fish Tank Kings is the new show on Nat Geo(I think). The episode this past week had them going diving in a sub to collect deep water fish for one of the Florida aquariums. Their fish expert is a little annoying with his use of proper names for all fish and corals, but I think he does a good job of explaining acclimating and understand what types of fish work better in systems. It is something that is missing on Tanked.

I agree I like Fish Tank Kings better. The fish guy on FTK is really into detail.

Well, on Tanked, I know that at least 2 of the tanks were moved/sold.

The phone booth tank from season 1 ended up on eBay via a LFS in Vegas, and the ship-themed tank in NY built for the little boy who had umpteen heart surgeries ended up in Darien's store in NY (the LFS that the livestock came from, featured on the show). Darien told me that himself when I saw him at a trade show last September.

Don't know about any others firsthand though.

I met Brett Raymer last year at a trade show - nice enough guy. I expressed my concerns about the speed at which the tanks are fully stocked etc., he told me "made for TV" - which I understand... but he told me that the second season would explain things in more detail. So far all I've seen is them mention that they're using pre-packaged real seawater, and adding bottled bacteria to seasoned media. While the latter may be helpful it's still not a substitute, IMO, for properly settled out tank.

It's my impression that they are "tank guys" not "fish guys", and there is a difference from one to the other.

I agree. I heard that alot of 'fish' people are getting VERY upset because they are over stocking tanks and stressing corals...ect.. by adding them at wrong times. I did not catch the show, but people complained that they stressed a puffer and pulled it from the tank just to get it to puff up.
Shame, but non-fish people want to see drama I guess.

On the other hand if a person says I got 100k to spend on a tank. It better have fish in it. If they didnt do it somebody would. Not saying it is right. But it is the way of the world.

Yeah they show the "puffer incident" in the opening credits o_O (Tanked)

When I met Brett it was shortly after MACNA, I think he was doing the rubber-chicken circuit. I heard he got raked over the coals pretty hard at MACNA, because yes, a lot of industry types are upset about the way slapping up a tank is being portrayed. When I spoke with him, I was courteous but concerned, and he addressed my concerns but at this point I'm not terribly convinced that bad things don't happen - but that is just my opinion.

I've watched 1 1/2 episodes of Fish Tank Kings - I keep falling asleep (not a statement about the show, I'm just tired when I watch it). The first episode was more focused on the Lexan shield to protect the tank from fastballs. What bugged me about that one, is they stressed how good it was to have captive-raised Porkfish to place in the tank - it was stated that this tank was to be one of the, "all things Miami" theme of the new baseball stadium. That's great - they explained how it's environmentally friendly and such... so I was thinking, "Cool, a biotope tank." The fish guy was all worked up about the artificial corals being "wrong"... so again, I'm thinking he's wanting to go for something authentic-looking to the native reefs around that area.

THEN later they talk about a shipment of Pacific fish they got in, and they proceed to add a bunch of South Pacific fish to the same tank. Now - being a nerd in the trade, I picked up on this, many probably wouldn't have - but a Flagfin Angel, Lunare Wrasse and other such fish, don't come from off the coast of Florida, so the whole biotope thing just went right out the window.

Probably a minor detail to most - but if they went to the trouble to stress the Miami connection, why then, mess it up?

I hear that Disney/Pixar is re-releasing, "Finding Nemo" in 3-D. I guess that will start another run of Nemo/Dory tanks...

Yeah, some kinds of PR are good for the hobby and the trade, but ask any responsible Dalmation breeder if Disney and that PR was "good for business."

Double-edged sword that... when people come in expecting an instant showpiece and then we have to educate them that it's not quite that simple.

Well in my experience, the majority of people would prefer not to have their money wasted on a pile of dead fish, and a disappointing and frustrating experience.

Some do - and I suppose there are some dealers that will cater to that. I'm not one of them. As a businesswoman I'm more likely to keep a customer long-term by having them do it right - and slowly, than going for the short-term cash grab and in 6 months their tank is on Craig's List because they are tired of putting good money after bad.

From my side of the counter, I'd sooner keep the customer long-term and count on their support over years, not a few months.

But hey, that's just me :)

It is on Natgeo. Sorry. That's what I get for listening to my wife. LOL

Jenn, I understand the strain it puts on LFS when people expect to have a Nemo and Dory tank at the drop of a hat but it is like anything else in this world. The good ones will try to educate and and inform and they will ultimately survive. The bad ones will take advantage and ultimately fail. It is just a shame that living creatures have to suffer because of the bad ones.

Oh I agree 100% as I have turned down bussiness that I couldnt in good consious do.(spelling). I was just speaking in the terms what alot of people not in the hobby dont know. I we all appriciate your good salesmenship and customer service.

Well the onus isn't ONLY on the dealers. Ultimately the consumer is responsible for what they buy - in anything, not just aquariums and such.

It's just easier to blame the store when the proverbial spam hits the fan.

Nemo came out, what, 7 or 8 years ago maybe? To this day barely anyone calls a common clownfish by either its common name or scientific name, nor a P. hepatus tang by any of its common names (Regal, Hippo, Pacific Blue, etc.) It's all "Nemos" and "Dories". Ugh.
