Temp ?

Hey guys in the process of cycling my 90. I'm a little concerned about the current temp swings I'm seeing. In the morning my temp is 78.4 and by the end of the day it's at 80.2(this is without running my refugium light). My question is should I expect any negative impact on live stock with this type of temp swing? I'm trying not to purchase a chiller, so how much temp decrease could I possibly see with the addition of some cooling fans. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Kenny

My tanks do the same swing, I have not had any problems. I do have overhead ceiling fans in the rooms I have the tanks in.:D

A two degree swing really isn't a problem.

Just remember that adding a cooling fan will help control the temp but it will also increase evaporation. If you don't have an auto top off system you will have a salinity swing.

I really appreciate you guys take on this. Being a noob I'm just overly concerned about everything. I really want to provide an evironment where my lifestock, when I get them, thrive.

Pretty new myself and have little or no data to back this up but.....

While the ocean maintains pretty constant temp, I would be very surprised if it doesn't swing at least a few degrees throughout the day. Things like cloud cover, sun shine, currents, etc. But, in such a large body of water those swings would be pretty minute. At any rate, I think you are well withing accpetable range.

One other thing I noticed is that you said "Without running my refugium light" as if that will increase the swing. That tells me you are planning on running it at the same time as the display lights. I would recomend you put them on oposing cycles. Fuge on at night, display on during the day. That will help to maintain more constant PH.

That's assuming he has macro algae growing. The photosynthesis is what maintains the PH. Even with chaeto in my fuge it doesn't really have much of an effect on my PH at night. What has helped tremendously is dosing alkalinity during the night. Since the addition of my automated 2 part my PH has stayed relatively consistent. Low/8.06 High/8.17.

This may show my ignorance but I am good at that. hehehehe

Why would you have a fuge light if you were not growing macro algae?

This may show my ignorance but I don't think the inclusion of a refugium or a refugium light necessarily indicates the intent to grow macro algae.

But the reason I said that was because he indicated that he didn't have any fish so I assumed he may have not had macro algae growing.

Thanks for the info.

Mr RDnelson I was planning on running my refugium light 24/7. As I'm not for certain which type of macro algae Iwill attempt to have since I have no green thumb.(another topic). I no there is a concern of types going (sexual?). ie caulerpa. From what I read there would be no ill-effects running constant light. However Icould be mistaken I have gotten so much contradicting info over this past year researching.

I don't see a need for the Refugium light to be on 24/7. Just adds heat and wastes electricity. I would just have it on opposite the display myself.

You would need to light caulerpa 24/7 to prevent it from going asexual.

Thank-you JayU. I have read that. I'm not sure which type I will have in my refugium yet. As I can say on my 35 yrs on this planet I have never had any success with plants. So I have been planning for worst case in regards to lighting. thanks again you guys on here are great.

I don't have the greatest success growing macro algae either. Doesnt really have much of an effect on my tank either way. My nutrients have been low regardless and nothing super noticeable with PH swings. I do currently have a handful that I use as a "pod palace".

Thanks for the education Jay. I had no idea (which is why I said "Show my ignorance". LOL I wasn't trying to be smart.)

I didn't think you were. ;-)

That’s good. Because if you thought I was smart I would have to question your intelligence. LOL

No danger of you questioning my intelligence for that reason.
