The other extreme, no substrate at all

my 37 cube is bare bottom. all i have in it is 1 mp10, but when you put it in nutrient export, it cleans the bottom of tank very well. i have minor sand/coral particles that have made their way in somehow, i just siphon them out during wc's

I like the concept of a bare bottom tank, meaning being able to keep it clean, no worries of blowing sand around, etc., but I don't like the look of a bare bottom tank. So I use a thin layer of substrate.

Well, I went ahead and moved over to my bigger tank. I decided to sift the larger pieces of shells and rock and coral out of my sand, put it as the substrate in the new tank and I must I love it :wow2: :yay:! Its not bare so it doesn't look so artificial and it is a thin substrate

Jigsaw, if you haven't made a decision on whether to do a bare bottom tank yet I wanted to tell you about my solution. I put travertine tiles (a type of limestone) on the floor of the tank and sealed them with silicone. IMO it gives a natural look.

Also I dont run any unusual flow in the tank. I have a canister filter and have extended the intake to near the floor and it takes care of most of the detritis. Every so ofter I take a power head in my hand and blow any remaining detritis out of the corners and off the rocks.

It works for me and it is the cleanest tank I have ever had.
