The smallest saltwater tank possible...

Heck, you could do like a 5g all-glass with a HOB and one of those 70w viper clamp on lights. Would be really cool but you'd probably evap 2g per day. Raj had a thread on here doing something small like that.
 
To build on what I was saying in other posts John M Lundberg, have you considered an AIO like the 6 gal Nanocube or the Biocube 8? When I switched from the 2.5 to the 5.5 to the Biocube 8, I found myself topping off a lot less, and also having fewer issues with pH, heat, and overall stability. The stock lighting is adequate for easy softies and some easy LPS. Sure, it's more money up front, but for me it worked out a lot better in the long run (after I'd already wasted my money on tiny tanks, plus upgrades for said tiny tanks).

Excellent advice. I have been doing a little research since I read your post. I am thinking of going with this...the lighting is not the best, but I dont attend on having any major corals.
