This is cruel!

Thats why dog fighting and cock fighting are illegal and frowned upon. This guy has every right to want a mantis, to feed it appropriately, and to even enjoy its biology. But fabricating and publishing a video that does nothing but glamorize doing it for fun. there is a BIG difference in posting something like that for educations sake, versus posting it for entertainmnets sake. Would that video have been ok if it was feeding puppies to a lion?
lets get real... the main reason that people keep a mantis is because they enjoy having a vicious predator under their care. your dog fighting analogy isn't accurate because dogs/cocks are TRAINED to fight eachother to the death.. no one has to train that mantis shrimp a thing.

*the mantis is a natural predator of hermit crabs
*the hermit crab grew to a point where it was preying on the other, more docile fish/inverts in its previous tank (so it was no longer to be kept in that tank)

Nothing about this video is cruel, it was no different than watching an act that occurs in nature (even if a human did purposefully bring these two within close confines of each other, solely for the purpose of the event itself). people who keep reptiles and purchase live food for them do EXACTLY the same thing, they just dont go through the process of video/editing..

I would even argue that nearly EVERY person I've ever known that kept reptiles, kept them in part to witness their feeding habits..

Sorry to say, you couldn't be more wrong. Most serious mantis keepers appreciate their beauty, intelligence, and non feeding behaviors. This coming from the horses mouth in mantis keepers forums.

You are focusing on the animal behaviors. I am focusing on the eprsons behavior. Pitting two animals against one another for entertainments sake before all else is cruelty. If two dogs get in a fight accidentally and one kills the other, the owners aren't charged with dog fighting. But if they pit them against one another to do so for pure entertainment, they go to jail. Same action, different motivations.

I get it. You dont agree with me. You dont have to. It doesnt bother me if people arent bothered by it. I am. And its just my opinion.

And thats what makes it cruel.

I get the line. And how it happens in the wild etc.. I don't like people who film it i don't see the point if you get me. I don't see where the pleasure is in watching an animal be eaten by another. SImple solution i have for it is i tend not to watch videos of it. When i kept tropical fish my Butterfly loved to eat crickets so occasionally i would feed it a cricket so i can't take a high ground on it saying its wrong because there is absolutely no difference. But id never film it to put on youtube just for the sake of it. Always makes me laugh though how on every video like that you'll get loads of comments calling the poster sick, twisted etc for it. Its like seriously nobody is making you watch it.
