Tissue Necrosis?

One of my finger leathers, several days ago - developed an area that became black...as if necrotic. The black area spread some, but then appeared to stabilize with no noticable spread. Yesterday I sliced off the necrotic area. What would have caused this, and was I correct in excising the necrotic area?

I had a pagoda that showed signs similar to that. I moved it to a spot with more light and spot fed him everyday and in a couple of weeks the tissue showed improvement. It's fine now and all the tissue regrew. I didn't preform any surgery on it so i can't comment on that. More light+more food worked for me.
