New fish trap - $60

5 days straight sitting in front of the tank for 3 hours holding onto fishing string - a pain

Watching every fish you have go in except for the one you want to catch - UN FRIGGIN BELIEVABLE!!!!!!! :aargh4:

Went through that with my Yellow Choris Wrasse. He would stick his nose in but that was it. Finally I decided to drop it even though only about 1/10 of him was in the trap. I was going to catch him or cut his nose off. LOL. As soon as the slide started down he panicked and swam forward instead of backwards and I had him.

Had the same experience with my yellow clown goby. Could have caught every other fish multiple times. The goby acted like he knew what was up, though -- even going so far as to swim up and perch on the trap just to troll me.

what works best is a piece of lexan about 12-18" and as tall as your water line. go to the corner of the tank and make a triangle. open one side 4-6" and then coax in in the smaller area. then close the lexan and then you have him boxed in. either use your hand or a net. i prefer the hand but sometimes the net wins.

A huge damsel. I've tried putting it in different areas but he won't go in. Thanks for the ideas.

Eagle's idea was what I ended up doing. Of course, I had to remove half my rock in order to be able to create an area to trap him in. (The fish, not Charles.)

Are you feeding inside the trap? Don't even worry about the trap door until the fish has shown a willingness to go into it. I'd start every feeding inside the trap. It may take a week or two for the fish to get comfortable. Another option if the fish is aggressive, tape a fish picture to the back of the trap.

The trap has a separate compartment towards the back that holds the food. He still won't go in. How much longer can I starve all the others before this sucker goes in??

I had to catch a black and white damsel one time. I mad a trap from a 2 liter coke bottle. Cut the top out and invert it. Cut out the hard part wher the cap screws on but cut it narrow and tall like the shape of the fish. Tape the inverted top back on the bottle. Make a small whole at the top of the bottle directly behind the entrance and another one an inch or two back. First use a pippet to shoot the food (I used frozen mysis) in front of the opening gradually getting closer. Then when the fish will get really close to the entrance, use the top hole to put food on the inside right behind the entrance. Be patient and he'll eventually get brave enough to go after it. Once he goes in, he can't get back out as long as ur entrance is small enough. If it doesn't work the first day, leave the bottle in there so he feels its normal and try again later. Hope this helps.

Oh, the first cut should be the whole neck of the bottle. That's the part that needs to be inverted.

Thank you for the idea. I actually tried this once with the coke bottle and only caught a hermit crab. I actually caught him easily this morning. I got up at 3am and turned on all the lights, scared him out of his hole and scooped him right out. He didn't even see it coming.
