Not that you asked... and it sounds like you have the experience to know what you want, but my vote for a check valve: https://www.aquacave.com/1-georg-fischer-gf-disc-y-check-valve.html

Imm1967 has a great point about failure... I decided to put one in simply for maintenance purposes. My sump can definitely take all the return water that will siphon, the valve is just extra precaution/convenience. Now, stuck shut is another story...

This thing makes an awful racket when it shuts, but it's allegedly the most reliable type, and (also allegedly) easiest to clean/service. YMMV!!

I added tried and shut off the pump and had just enough room for the water to backflow... i added the valve anyways with unions so if anything does go wrong i can always change it out. But the tanks have been running for a few days so far.

Nice work Tony, seen it in person, I didn’t know you had this thread, lots of help here. Wondering why you didn’t make this tier with wood framing, same as the other tier? My point is the longevity of the stand, being metal you really don’t know how far they can go, I mean, for what I know some are powder coated and will last but just thought about making a comment since you pretending to use it for long term, and I’m pretty sure you have the time and skills for what you have told me and show me in your breeder setups.
Other than that I believe you’re going in the right direction on the setup. Here it used to be a clown breeder very successfull that it used to live in Athens? I’m sorry, I can’t remember at this moment, thought that if he still is around the forum it could give you more insight about preparations and tips for the clown breeding journey.

Yea you saw my big breeding setup and i knew you were going to question why i didnt do it to this set up lol. Ive run these shelves for years for my other setup before and havent had any issues as each shelf is welded to the legs instead of using those plastic holders. So im kinda stuck with the height for life lol. I might eventually convert to all wood though once i start moving stuff around.

the bottom two are just cheapo black boxes there. Eventually will move on to better things once i find a deal lol

I've seen some serious colonies grown under those cheap black boxes though, they put out some light. Hit me up and I'll come over to take PAR readings whenever you'd like.
