Hey folks, as promised, I said I would start my build thread. I just paid my dues today (4/21/16), and am so excited to start this journey again after a 6 year break from reefing!

The first item to arrive.....the return pump via Amazon for $148, the Jebao DC12000 (This pump was suggested by a few of you, and it looks like a solid choice...THX!)

Skimmer just arrived! The Vertex Alpha 200. This thing is a BEAST. I cant wait to what this bad boy pulls out of the water! It is slighly oversized for the 180, but I plan to stock the heck out of this tank....so excess nutrient export is a must!

For reference, its sitting in a 40breeder that I was planning to use for the sump....

Here is why i said WAS planning to use it for my sump....i am not sure I have enough room for a large filtersock and a fuge, and still have a decent size chamber for the return pump....as well as baffles. Its going to be VERY tight unless I get something longer :(. Oh well, perhaps it will make a nice frag tank :P

Lighting:

Lighting has always been something that I have pondered over for a very long time, and made MANY changes over the years. This time I want to do it "right" the first time. That being said, I had many considerations in making that choice as to what is "right" for me.

First:

T5 - While they produce some fantastic colors and growth, I just dont like the stale/motionless look the tank has with them, so they will not be my lighting of choice for this tank. Ive used them in the past with great success, but changed over to Halide for a look that i preferred.

Halide - I really really liked my old setup of 1x400w XM20k per 24" of tank. I also used 2xVHO Super Actinic as the off peak, as well as additional coral pop while the halides were on. Ive tried both HQI Phoenix, and the XM20k 400w, and while the phoenix were nice, the XM20k was my all time favorite. Unfortunately, that came with a cost in both power and heat. It also sucked up a ton of additional room in my canopy. In the end, given I now live here in Atlanta, adding heat and moisture to my house is probably an unwise thing to do, and for that reason, I am going to try LED this go around.

LED: In my current research I have come across a number of different options. Some are super expensive, some are super cheap, and some appear to have issues with shading, and or "disco colors". Because I like to have my cake and eat it to....I want to find a solution that does not have either shading, or disco colors, but will provide enough power to allow me to have any coral I want, anywhere in the tank, have controlability, add minimal heat to the tank, and not require bulb changes.

For the time being, I am looking VERY strongly at building a custom LED light using CREE Lumia 5.2 LED clusters. These each have 25 leds, with 5 different channels/spectrums, all controllable via Apex. While the kessils are a nice light, what did it for me was viewing a guy's tank that had simply stunning SPS. He had the Cheap Chinese LEDs, Kessils, AND one of these Lumia 5.2s. He much preferred the lumia 5.2 over the kessil, which is shocking to me given the price tag. Either way, I think I can build a 6-8 Lumia LED fixture over the 180 that can meet all of my needs, so unless I come across something different, that is the current plan :).

The video that convinced me:

I just happened to come across it on youtube while researching led lighting. I dont recall what my search string was, but this dude really seemed to like the Lumia 5.2 setup....its hard not to take this guy's advice given this is one of the finest tanks I have ever seen, and I have seen some **** fine tanks :).

More goodies arrived this morning:

So my wife suggested I set it up as a peninsula in our kitchen. I may need to drop it to 5' if I do that, but I could probably go wider...like a 5x3x2

Nice, what company did you choose?

Light kit has been ordered.

Wow was that expensive! I am going with a 6 lumia 5.2 with bluefish mini controller from ledgroupbuy.com . All parts came to about $1400. Alot more than i anticipated :)

That being said, these lights are pretty bad ***, and have the exact color I want (although thats adjustable anyway).

My first salt tank in 6 yrs lol!

Stopped by Rit's place, and picked up some test kits, box of salt, and one 50lb box of the Fiji premium he just got in.....it's cookin time!

This will be my seed rock. I plan to get another 100 or so lbs of Marco rocks

Here are most of the LED drivers and the SCWs that drive misc devices such as fans and the onboard Bluefish controller....the rest of the build materials are inbound from ledgroupbuy.com
