We recently decided to change salts to a "higher quality" salt to see if it made a different. We have been using normal instant ocean salt with no issues that Ivan aware of other than the alk is a tag low ( sound 7.5, we run at 8.5-9). I bought 4 barrels of the high grade stuff since it was on sale.

After mixing it in my brute I tested it. TDS reading before DI 3 . TDS readings after DI 0

Results

Temperature at which water was mixed - 71.6
Time spent mixing - 12 -13 hours

Alk, magnesium, and alk was tested by a Red Sea kit
Everything else was tested using Elos

Alk - 9.0ish
Magnesium - 1340
Calcium - 440

Awesome results... But here's the where the negatives came in.

Nitrate - 10 ( high but livable)
Phosphate - 2+... not .02 , not .2 but 2... Really???
Here's the killer
Ammonia readings -
My test - 3...
LFS 1 - 1.5
LFS 2 - 2
LFS 3- 2

The store I bought from promptly refunded my money nonquestion asked . Awesome people.

The question is , is there a way to track the batch?

Salinity. Purchased 9/24/2011. The store said it was probably an isolated incident. I didn't want to hassle them about it since they refunded me the money and gave me credit for my inconvenience.

not the best picture but here is how you track them: upper left hand corner near the barcode there is a Lot#, that is the tracking of each salt batch

What's up with Seachem products lately!? I've not used Salinity before and just ordered a barrel from Jenn and I'm scared to death to use it now after hearing one bad thing after another. Double You, The, F! Did ownership change or something?

I wouldn't wory seth. I have been using the aquavitro line since launch and I have yet to have a baffled experience.. well one.. cost but for what I am gettin I am ok with it..

Did you check all the parameters of the RO before you mixed it? If it was a new mixing container it may contain some kind of chemical used by the manufacture.
