Transferring red bugs

If I could get anyone's thoughts on the ease of transferring red bugs by moving the snails and crabs back into the DT from a holding tank? I have read it both ways, not at all and yes a possibility of them coming back.

I treated the tank approximately a few months back and they have now returned. I am now treating again and I think I am gonna take the chance by leaving the crabs in the DT. I don't believe it will be a mass suicide being a bunch of my crabs were left in the DT last time.

When I treated years ago, all the crabs i didnt get out died. So be prepared for that.

It is my understanding that LRB needs the host acro to live so assuming the snails and crabs were out of the system for a couple weeks, I would say they are clean. Did you do 3 treatments?

No I believe that was my problem. I only did 1 due to me only having enough pills for it. But now I have enough medication to do 3. So hopefully I can knock them out this time. Not sure of the egg hatch period but I believe it is a couple months. I didn't see any and then all of a sudden they were back in full force.

How long did they take to regroup I dipped one of my frags several weeks ago with bayer insecticide I'm wondering how long I have before I need a re-dip

For what its worth, I was able to knock them out doing 3 treatments, 1 week apart. I took my refugium and other tanks that shared the same water, off line for the treatments and re-joined them after the treatments were completed. No more LRBs.

Not sure I haven't done your method. But mine came back in about 2 months.

U wasn't worried about the eggs being in the rest of the tank.? How long has it been since you last treated the tank?

I thought that they were live breeders and it only took a week or two to complete the life cycle? Never heard of eggs and months? I treated my acropora corals in a qt tank and let the main system go w/o acro for a month and they never came back. Did you add anything new?

FWIW:

a couple of years back....

I did one treatment for Red Bugs

a month or two later I had bugs

Then I did one tretment

a month or two later I had bugs
(nothing introduced this time)

Then I did 2 treatments

bug free ever since!

Now montipora eating nudibranchs is another story. I heard it can take up to three months to starve them out f your display after removing all montis. I did just that and had to frag the mother colonies too cause I could never get rid of them no matter what I tried. Seems like eggs and/or nudis were always able to avoid the meds because they were hidden in deep crevices on the mother colonies during treatment.

No I never added anything from the time I last treated till the time I noticed them the second time. Now I have added since then but I'm positive the new pieces are not the source.

I'm gonna do 2 treatments this go around and see what happens. I have the first dose in now and will complete my water change in the morning. I will let it sit for a week then dose #2.

Well you can only do it as a dip, you cant treat the whole tank, but i really only had one frag that was affected so it worked good for me, ive been bug free for about a month now so maybe i'll re dip it in a week or so.I'll just not buy anymore acro until im sure theyre gone and then dip everything else i buy. I thought using insecticide was crazy when i first heard of it but i guess its not any more crazy than using heartworm pills.

A very good read. Thank you. I haven't read that one.

Yea both are real crazy but sounds like both work.

The last time I treated a whole tank was about 6 years ago in my 58 gal. I left everything in and didnt loose a single snail crab or shrimp but it sure killed all the red bugs.

Now everything gets a 12-24 hour interceptor dip, then a 1 min fresh water dip, then a hour flatworm exit dip, then a iodine dip before it goes in.

I'm hoping for the same results.

Well I just checked the tank and in the process of mixing salt. All read bugs appear to be gone by the naked eye. I see red and blue leg crabs still moving so a good sign.

Well day #2 and no signs of red bugs. I did however lose about half of my crabs. Looks as if the red legs have a stronger will to survive. Just in 2 days I have seen a lot of the color come back to the corals affected by the bugs. The polyps of the corals are beginning to poke the tips out but, I can only imagine it will take another week for all to be healthy once again.

I tried the Bayer dip yesterday so it's kind of a "wait and see" at this point. I treated 3 frags yesterday and immediately noticed the garf bonsai with better polyp extension. Red bugs from 3 frags are completely gone.
