Tunze 6105 Generates Heat?

I'm debating between buying a couple of Tunze 6105 or Vortech MP40's. Can't figure out which way to go. Getting conflicting information. What I have right now is 265 FOWLR. I only want to add circulation to prohibit algae growth and provide circulation so waste won't all settle to the bottom of the tank (pushed towards the overflow). I heard the Tunze generate heat. I can certainly save over $200 buying a couple of Tunze's but then I don't want to end up spending a load of dough buying a chiller. Any suggestions? If I buy the Tunze's, I will like place them towards the top of each overflow. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I have both a vortech Mp40 and twin Tunze's. I have not really noticed a heat difference with or without the Tunze's. I can tell you at least in my case the Tunze's are silent, the vortech is not. I run the pair on my Reefkeeper so they pulse on and off in wavemaker mode.

What about cords, are they pretty visible on the Tunze? Can I attach the Tunze on my overflow pointing downwards? Would that be the best location for a 265 gallon tank?

The vortech does have a whine to it. but here are the result from the test when i decided on which power-head to purchased

Experiment was done a 75 gallon non-RR, filled with about 60 gallons and marked.
Temperature was taken using an apex, and time tested for each power head was about 14 hours. 8AM to 10 PM. No heater was used.

Vortech MP40: Set on constant (green) at 100%
Starting temp: 74.9
Max peak: 75.8 @ 4 PM

2 Tunze Turbelle 6105: This had no controller for it, so it was assumed to be running at 100%
Starting temp: 74.8
Max peak : 75.5 @ 3:30 PM

There may have been some error in my experiment, but for the most part the heat output was roughly the same and negligible.

I am currently using 4 x MP40( 2 on the back and 1 on each side) and 2x 6105 (1 on each overflow and aimed towards center of tank) in my marineland DD. Total volume of water is about 310-320. Even with a mag drive and a few maxi, my temp swings are minimal.

I would suggest using a few of each. The mp40 has more spread but lacks directional, thats why i used both

Thanks for the info. Do you recommend powerhead for a FOWLR tank? If so, how many?

Additionally, do you have the Tunze interfacing with Apex? If so, does the powerheads hook up directly with the Apex module or through the Tunze Controller?

Thanks...

Will this be converted to reef anytime soon? Because if it's for fish I recommend neither due to the relatively high price. I would get 2-4 koralia and call it a day. I seen k-8 run around 40 on here. And 2 would be suffiencient

Not anytime soon but maybe down the road. I might throw in a coral every now and then if I run across a very good deal. Right now I have a hammerhead, frogspawn, an anenome and a couple of mushrooms. They're all pretty small. Having said that, the aquarium is situated in a fairly formal setting. It does have a canopy. Therefore, I am very particular about getting things which are aesthetically acceptable. In other words, no dangling wires and nothing really obtrusive which takes away from the view within the tank. Plus, I would like something I can hook up to my Apex and/or at least something whose flow can be adjusted/manipulated.

Thanks...

This is how I set it up. As you can see there still some wire showing but minimal.

What if I placed the Tunze further up but on the overflow itself, and not on the glass as you have it. That would hide the wire altogher, right?

If I was mainly interested in keeping the sandbed somewhat clear of waste (directing waste towards the overflow), would the tunze or vortech better serve that objective? Additionally, you stated that the vortech does have a whine to it. Is it pretty audible? Do you know of some marine store which has both set up. I would like to swing over and check out the difference. I'm still confused as to which route I should go. I know that if I purchase the Tunze, I will likely place them on the overflow as far up as it will go without splashing water all over. That would mean that the heads would have to be pointed downwards at an angle. If that is the case, then would it serve the purpose of not only adding circulation towards the bottom of the tank, minimizing dead spots but also pushing waste stuff towards the overflow? Of will the MP40's do a better job at that? Although the Tunze happens to be much cheaper, but I would rather pay a little more for something which does the job rather than save money on something which doesn't do the job. Your suggestions/thoughts?

Thanks...
