While I know that a BA is typically 3 down pipes.....is there way to do essentially the same thing with dual internal overflows? I know that my returns then have to run over the back and I'm perfectly ok with that because it will actually give me more returns to the tank and I like that idea. I just don't know what the BA would look like.

Or is this called something else? Where can I find directions on how to make one?

BA is 3 and only 3. There is lots of post about what you are trying to do on R.C.

I believe the twin over flow design is called the Herbie method. Try searching Herbie overflow in Google.

That is it. I could not remember the name for them.

That's what I needed to know. I knew there was a name for it but I couldn't remember it (CRS issues).

Great, glad I could help. That will be 300 internet dollars please.

The Herbie method is very similar to a BA, only less complicated, has easier to find parts, and can be set up on your current reef ready tanks. More or less works by the same principles though.

I'm doing some research on the Herbie now. Seems though that there are a couple versions of it out there. I found some info on Reef Central but can't view the pics, presumably because I'm not a registered member.

Not similar at all. Not even close. BA is not complicated it is very easy to set up. Parts could not be any easier to find for a Bean Animal all are found at your local hardware store. I did read up on the Herbie when I built my tank. Herbie is what I would use if you have a standard RR tank. They look like they work good, put water in the sump quite, But that is where the similarity stops.
To: the OP They guy that developed the Herbie type has a thread on RC also that tells all the in's and out's of how to set it up go there and it is easy to find. (membership is free) then do a search and you will find it.

Edit:

Brilliant man, has some very good ideas in the industry and he should be proud he came up with the best overflow system out there. He is also a member here, but some of the members ran him off by being a S.A. to him. (its a shame). I contacted him on R.C. and talked to him many times. Very nice guy. and very helpful.
