I got these fish a while ago from my LFS. They didn't know what they were as they got them on a trade, and I can't find them anywhere on-line. I believe it is some type of goby from it's behavior in that it doesn't swim much, but hangs around the sandbed and rocks. He doesn't burrow, or anything, just kind of hangs around the bottom of the tank.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks all!!!

Edit: Sorry for the cell phone pics, but this thing won't sit still long enough for me to get the digital camera going. They are quick as heck too...

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. I'm googling what you all are coming up with as we speak...

Edit: Gotta love this forum!!!

I was gonna suggest Chalk Bass as well. I've been considering one of these.

I've looked at the gobies, and came close, but nothing that is a match. The closest I came was brown-barred goby.

It has the patterns of a dull chalk bass, but doesn't behave like one.

It does, in-fact somewhat have the movements of a hawkfish, but I can't seem to find one with these markings to identify.

It's peaceful to everything except the other fish of it's kind in this tank, and it will eat anything you put in the tank. Doesn't really have a predatory nature, but an aggressive scavenger.

Thanks for all of the replies. Keep them coming and I'll keep looking as well...

LOL!!! :yay:  :D :tongue2:   :wow2: :lol2: :fish:   :friday: :thewave: :spankme: :spankme: :spankme: :spankme: :spankme: :spankme: :spankme: :spankme: :spankme: :spankme: :spankme: :spankme:

I can see the resemblance in the markings. It's just the body structure that throws me off.

I almost had it narrowed down to a brown-barred goby, but, it has the markings and eyes of a bass, and the behavior and swimming characteristics of a hawkfish or a fast non-burrowing goby...

Xyrichtys species?

This is a genus of wrasse that resemble the fish you have.

Edit: A.k.a. razorfish.

Wow. Now we are getting warm!!! What do you all think?

I'm thinking its some type of razorfish. I don't know enough About them to give a certain ID. Splendens may be a good match. It's hard to tell from the pic. I saw this thread a day or two ago and have been thinking about it since then.

It doesn't have enough pigment in the dorsal fin or solid colors in the stripes that a juvi giant hawk has.

Not the shape or eyes of a bass.

Not the mouth or body of most gobies.

Good one. I actually thought of that as well because his body has the structure of a flame hawkfish, but his mouth is so much smaller in diameter...

I see you share my confusion... Hey. I see you are from Auburn, GA with a name of RippedTide... Are you from Auburn Alabama?

Edit: That question, doesn't read right. Hopefully, you know what I'm trying to ask...

Haha, no, there is an Auburn Ga. It's out near Athens. The ripped tide s/n comes from the pleasure of being able to sit back, have a drink, relax from a long day of work, and enjoy the tank.

I'm actually FROM Cumming GA...
