I had yet another diatom bloom. This time its crazy everywhere. I mean its turned EVERYTHING brown. Except on section... Not sure why it didn't affect one section but it didn't. Its reproducing faster than my cleanup crew can handle. What do I do? Would stirring up the sand bed help? Because its just a layer of brown on my sand. And as for the rocks its not a big deal because they will be covered with other corals eventually but I don't want it on the sandbed. Please help

No I thought about doing that but you convinced me not to. Lolthey all have 15000k mh directly over each section. About 12 inches above the water

Oh while your here what is the coral I got that is lime green with the pink center. Its on my sandbed but it looks likes a tiny volcanoes with feelers on top.... I can't remember the name.

Diatoms will eventually go away on their own. They are consuming the silicates from your water column which will eventually fade way. The only "cure" is time in my experience.

You can decrease the photo period to help out. Just make sure your corals are ok with it.

Just wait, they will pass, other issues will arise too, just be patient, they too will pass, give it about 6-9 months and things should settle in and stop going in cycles like this. It just takes time, we have all been through the same situation, and you should just chill out. Tape your hands together and sit on them.

^^ +1

If you do have a plate tree that is producing I'm interested in trading. PM me if you want to

How old is the tank? What are your parameters?

In a new tank a diatom bloom is normal and expected, but it usually burns itself out in a week or so.

If you are having repeated blooms, something is wrong. Please provide more details about the tank - age, size, inhabitants, feeding, lighting, and water change regimen.

The tank is going on 3 months old now. I do weekly 5% water changes. It's 6 foot 130 gallon tank, 180 pounds of live rock in the display about 10 pounds of live rock in my refugium I have a 3 inch sand bed in DT and a 5 inch sand bed in the refugium. I have Chaeto In my fuge, 3 green chromis, 1 fire goby, 1 yellow watchman goby, 2 bangi cardinals, 1 coral banded shrimp 8 blue leg hermits, 5 red leg hermits, 1 peppermint shrimp, 1 scarlet hermit, 1 emerald crab, 3 turbo snails, 3 different species of zoas, 1 Kenya tree, 1 small frogspawn, 1 small plate coral, 1 small patch of pulsating xenia, 1 clam, and 2 narcissus snails (sp). I run run 3 175 watt 15 k metal halides.
My parameters are with normal range. I'm at work so I can't give u specifics they are wrote down at home.

Oh and I feed a small pinch of reef flakes in the morning when lights come on. Enough for the few fish to consume in less than a minute. Then a small pinch of frozen brine shrimp 2 hours before lights go out.

All your frustrations sound like they have paid off, that is an awesome setup!!!
I wouldn't worry to much about your bloom but Jenn is the Jedi here, sounds like new tank stuff...just keep up with you water changes and watch you lighting cycles, feedings and coral banded shrimp, they *can* be tricky.

Thank you very much. It seemed like a lot of frustration during the setup process. But it all seems to be better. The diatoms are actually going away now. I had been building a protien skimmer and it never seemed to work. But 2 nights ago I got it working. At least ed I hoped then I allowed it to run overnight and all day yesterday. When I got home from work last night it had an ugly dry frothy foam hanging from my collection tube and dropping I to my collection chamber. This morning I have about an inch of dark brown almost black gunk. I'm so impressed with this skimmer I built I'm gonna add another one into my sump because bi have all the parts except a pump. So I spend another 30 bucks on a pump and bam I have another skimmer that will skimmer like the big boys.

Kourtney I've been reading ur threads since you got on here. I'm very glad to see that you have now got a solid system put together that you will be happy with. You have worked hard congradulations .

Lol thank you. It's been fun and frustrating and just about every emotion in between. Lol now the enjoyment of it all can set in. I can research more corals, learn how to frag them and get back to the beauty of this hobby. PEACE AND RELAXATION

She had posted pics a couple weeks ago, even though some new ones should be posted...:)
