Unusual Hippo Tang Coloration?

A while back andregracia_73 was at the house and noticed that the color of my Hippo Tang was different than any he had seen. I looked them up on the web and found a site that had lots of pictures but none like mine. Mine has black from the front of the dorsal fin down to its mouth where all the other pictures showed this as blue. Has anyone else seen this?

Thats a very unusual morph Bud. For fishnuts like me, its a very desireable thing. Heres some recent ones Ive heard of:

That would be the mom or dad of some exspensive Dori's if the morph bred true ....... Btw anyone ever got them to breed ?

If you mean in the forehead area it has some tiny specs of blue that shows through.

Nope. There are no caprive bred tangs anywhere. The most that has ever been done has been collection of just premetamorphosis larval, and raising from there, but that hasnt been done in 10 years or so.

I think the female releases the eggs and gets swarmed by males fertilizing them in the water column

They are communal spawners, and enormous groups will release gametes into teh water column to fertilize and develpo while on the current. Many marine anials breed this way. Sadly, it is near impossible to replicate in captive settings (near, but not totally), so this is why there is so few captve bred marines. FWIW, Frank at RCT Hawaii is supposedly going to restart his captive breeding efforts in 2010 some time, and has some tangs and amazing angels on tap. Just rumors right now, though.
