Hi Everyone,

I had a quick question. I have the ASM G-4 protein skimmer and I think the pump is on its way out. I want to buy a new pump, but I want to make it a better skimmer. I was wondering if I could improve performance just by adding a bigger venturi pump? What is everyone's experience.

I have no experience with the ASM G-4, but with my Vertex IN-80, my main complaint was how noisy the stock pump was. This is the prime complaint that most people have with this skimmer.

I went to a buddies house and he had a skimmer that had the Tunze Hydrofoamer pump on it and it was DEAD-SILENT. I spec'd out the pumps and bought a slightly larger Tunze pump to replace the OEM pump. Did some plumbing and away we went. It took me a lot of playing to get the right height, and it takes in so much air that I had to remove the hose from the "muffler" and just run it straight (still no noise from it), but now it skims like a beast and is silent in my sump.

Long story short, many skimmers can benefit from a high-quality pump. Just don't go overboard in the size, try to be pretty close to what the original specs were or you will have problems getting it adjusted right.

I'd look into the bubble blaster pumps. I almost put one on my ASMG2. Not the cheapest pumps but they work very well
