Upgrading tank question

Hey everyone,

So I recently bought a new tank from a member on here and I was wondering on the best way to move everything over.

I am currently in a Fluval Edge 8 gallon and transferring to a Jbj 12 gallon.

I am moving back into my dorm room and so my plan was to pack everything in my tank up and move it like I normally would. I successfully moved everything when I came home so I'm hoping the same principles apply even though it'll be a different tank.

I was thinking I will add my old sand bed, only about half an inch, because it already has all my bacteria established. I also was thinking of putting in my old filter sponge and ceramic discs again because I don't want to lose the bacteria. I also have carbon and purigen that I will run in the filter chamber.

Do you guys think this will be alright? I only have a CuC, softies and a single Clownfish in terms of livestock.

I would use all new sand and seed it with half a cup of your old sand. Not worth stirring up all the detritus. Are you using the same lr?

Well when I was moving my tank before Christmas break I actually took some sand out and stirred it up without any consequence. Did I just get really lucky with it?

And yes I was planning on keeping my current lr and adding some more, either dry or live I haven't figured it out yet.

If it is pretty clean you shouldn't have a problem. I added a good bit of mine when I upgraded tanks but I rinsed it really well in salt water. Added one cup of unrinsed off the top. I wish I would have just gone all new because it caused a couple of small issues. Luckily I siphoned it really good and all was well after that. If your using the same lr and ceramic discs I would put new rinsed sand in. Just add 1/2 cup of old to seed it. Will save a lot of potential headaches.

I would add dry rock as well. Much cheaper if you already have some good lr to seed it. I'm no expert by any stretch but just know what I have learned from my experience. Good luck!

No problem man! Sand is so cheap that it makes sense to use new to avoid problems. Will take longer to get establish but your fish and corals will be much happier!

And you shouldn't lose to much bacteria if your are reusing those discs. That plus the lr should keep everything good just remember to keep the lr and discs in saltwater when moving

So I got my tank settled back in. I got some more live rock from a ARC member a few days ago and everything seems to be settling back in save for one Zoa colony which has been closed.

I saw a worm on there so I pulled it off and did a freshwater dip, and have been dipping it in Iodine for the past few days. Only a few heads are opening still though. I'm not quite sure what else to do.

Other than that everything is great, it just looks a little plain at the moment. lol
