vacuuming sand bed?

we have had our tank running for about a year now and have never vacuumed the sand bed,and i was just wondering what peoples thoughts were on this.should i do it or is it not really necessary
 
Btw....does anyone think this leather looks like it is dying? It has never looked like this.

I vacuum once a month for aesthetic reasons. I didn't on my previous set up because i had used fine sand and vacuuming it caused a massive sand storm. I used a coarser sand on the current set up so it makes vacuuming it a lot easier. As for it being necessary; IMO it's not unless it's for a specific problem like cyano, diatoms or other nuisance algae outbreak.

It looks like it's extremely unhappy! Dieing? I couldn't be sure. FWIW mine has never looked like that!
