Yeah, i accidently push it off a lot actually :/ itll normally come down and devour the nori also, it's actually on the sandbed as we speak.

Before you dose, you'll want to test the calcium and see where it is. The ideal range is around 400ppm. Also, check your alkalinity and magnesium.

Tank is looking great. Ripped Tide can correct me if I am wrong here (just regurgitating what I have read). I have heard that you have to have some coraline in the tank for it to spread. If that is good info, getting a small piece of rock covered in coraline and placing it on some of the existing rock might help. Of course, if levels are not adequate it makes no difference.

It generally helps coraline grow faster if there is some in the tank to use as a seed. I have seen a few tanks that grew coraline without a substantial supply being added. I really noticed my coraline exploding in growth when I got religious about 2part(3part) dosing.

Maybe this tank could be good test tank. Right now he has none, if he starts dosing and adding chemistry, will the coraline grow? Or does it need to be seeded?

It doesn't make sense that if you were doing water changes and you had no coral, that you would not eventually have coraline growth. There is nothing in your tank that would be depleting your calcium levels. What kind of salt are you using? Perhaps the salt you are using has deficient alk, calcium, mag levels to start with. If you have to dose calcium when you are just beginning to add coral, that is a problem that will only magnify itself as you add more coral and it grows out. Additionaly I would look for optimal levels around kH 8.5, calcium of 450, and magnesium at 1350.

You made me think of something else.

He may have been doing weekly water changes, but in a fish only, you tend to over feed. Over feeding leads to phosphates. At levels of 0.25ppm and higher, phosphate will inhibit the calcification process. Maybe check po4 too.

True about F/O. Also people typically maintain lower salinity levels for F/O systems. For a reef you should maintain your salinity at 1.025. If you were mixing water changes at 1.017 or some other lower level for a F/O system, then you certainly were adding water with deficient levels, as the salt is mixed for optimal reef levels at 1.025 salinity.
