Hello,

I wanted to start vodka dosing for my 40 breeder sps tank. I was wondering how much should I start with and when I would know when to maintain the amount of vodka I am dosing at. Thank you.

First off, hello neighbor! Thought I would share my brief experience. I'm two months into vodka dosing and my nitrates have dropped a bit, but are still not at my desired range. Thus I'm still SLOWLY increasing the daily dose until I find my range.

Hope I'm not breaking any forum rules by sharing this link:

This will tell you the nuts and bolts of it. Essentially, it's a very slow gradual process to follow. Keeping a log of this is critical. I HIGHLY recommend obtaining the best nitrate test kit ( I like the Salifert kit). You will want to be on a very proactive testing regiment during this process.

Basically, when you've reached zero nitrates, you will cut the dosage in half and that will be your daily dose. NOTE: Make sure during this process you continue to feed your fish, coral etc. just as you would normally. Same goes for any maintenance you perform. Changing anything adds variables...

If this is a new tank, or your someone new in the hobby, I wouldn't recommend this as the best course of action if you or the tank are beginners JM2C.

Good luck!

Hellooooo jake!!! First, thanks for posting. Second, your red planet is encrusted and turning both green and red (velvet red on the back side and purple red on the front side) and getting very fat!

Does vodka dosing help with lowering of phosphate?

Awesome news! If there is too much green color, it's my experience from others, it isn't getting enough light.

The short answer I would say, no it does not. However, it does prevent phosphate in the sense it binds the nitrates for removal before they can break down into phosphate.

@Tony- was that question for me or the OP?

OP... Neighbor of mine and I know his tank is pretty new.

I thought the vodka dosing would help with keeping my phosphate levels at bay. What do you think? Should I start dosing? or just leave it be? I mean my tank is small enough. Just trying to get multiple opinions.

Currently my phosphate went to 1. I need to seriously get a new test kit once the API runs out or maybe I should just go buy a salifert like jake recommended.

Do you have a phosphate problem? What is the PO4 reading?

Its reading at 1 on the API test kit. Just tested today. Gonna do a water change tomorrow. I dont know if im over feeding but I reduced the amount of feeding from twice a day to once a day now. I use coral frenzy once every other day. Also, I add zooplankton Once a every two days.

Can't really trust that at all. Do you have algae all over the place? All your corals brown? That's 1.0 ppm PO4 using the TonyTester. :D

Corals arent brown except the mamba which is turning greenish yellow from one side. And yes, stick heads for sure!

I think you're OK. My tank upstairs only has a skimmer and I'm dosing two part. Nothing of mine looks better than the corals in that tank. Try and keep it as simple as you can. 10% WC every week. Test your new water before doing the WC ... just made a bad batch today myself. Would have nuked my tank if I didn't test the ALK.

BTW -- That's not RR Yellow Mamba now that I'm sober. It's ORA Ant Insignis.. does it look like one of these? http://www.orafarm.com/products/hardcoral/mimf/ant-insignis/">http://www.orafarm.com/products/hardcoral/mimf/ant-insignis/</a>

That's actually supposed to be greenish. It's just yellow in my tank with the Zeo supplements that I kind of overdid at first.

It sort of does but man I cant tell cause mine is all funky colored up. Imma take a picture tomorrow and send it your way. But it originally glows in the dark like a neon yellow green color when I first got it. Green polyps. Looked cool.

How do you nuke a tank with a water change?

Now im afraid to do a WC...I just switched over to a new salt mix (reef crystals) from the regular brand of instant ocean.

My kind of reefers! Unless your drinking that domestic bodily fluid yellow water that is.

None taken. I shall hold off on it and battle my phosphate issues.
