How do you nuke a tank with a water change?

Now im afraid to do a WC...I just switched over to a new salt mix (reef crystals) from the regular brand of instant ocean.

I made some water which was somehow 3 dkh (alk).. Supposed to be 7.8. Thought I mixed the dry salt well but maybe I have a bad bucket. 10% probably wouldn't do it but what if I mix that whole bucket over a month and never tested it? Probably wouldn't be in good shape.
Tropic Marin pro reef kind of has this reputation... I wouldn't worry about it. Just get a Hanna alk tester and use it a lot. Alk is everything with sticks.

Thanks bro. currently my Alk is at 11 dkh and calcium is at 500 range. I dont know what happened in the last couple of days. It was all good and suddenly I test today and haywire.

Yeah, that's pretty high across the board. What range are you normally in? I wouldn't even worry about testing Ca. You could test it four times and get four different results... plus it works with Alk, so if that's in line then you're Ca usually will be.

Normally was in the 8 to 9 dkh. ..but I do recall last week it was 7 dkh. man I think my kit is messed up.

I dosed it twice with seachem cause it was at 7 dkh and the directions said it would go up just a little bit (have the thing downstairs) so I figured it would be in the 8 to 9 range. Probably my mistake on that one.

We're going to have to get you a better system than that. You'll want to test at the exact same time in successive days and determine the amount that your tank is consuming in that 24 hour period. Then we can calculate how much to add per day to keep it rock solid. Going up a "little bit" isn't really the best approach :shades:

Yeah, that's not really what you want. Stop by this weekend and I'll sort you out with some good 2-part and teach you how to "use it".

"Zack" there is a thread on another forum where there has been reports of reef crystals running high alk. Tony would be the guy to see on the dosing. Simplify as much as possible so that you don't get frustrated. Sticks take patience but will pay off once your stable.
