I'm curious about about water changes in systems that include a refugium/sump. Those of you that have a refugium/sump, when you do a water change, do you:
1. Only change water in the DT
2. Only change water in the sump
3. Change some from both
4. If you change water in both, what percentages do you change in both and do you change both during each water change?

I drain water from the DT and add it to the sump when I fire up the return pump. I have a 50 gal barrel holding the change water plumbed to the sump with a ball valve. The fuge is part of the sump and the frag tank is plumbed to and from the same sump. I sometimes drain the water from the frag tank when it needs to be cleaned out. The water mixes together, so it doesn't really matter--do what's easiest. (As long as you're not sucking pods out of your fuge!)

It doesn't really matter... it all mixes together anyway. I personally do my WC totally from the sump (partly for convenience, partly so I can vacuum the detritus from the floor of the sump).

Yeah, it all gets mixed together as soon as the pump is turned on... so as long as the replacement water's temp and salinity are the same as the display it does not really matter.

I personally like to put the new water into the sump so as to not disturb the display, but that is just personal preference.

Thx for the responses guys. Wanted to get a general feel of what most would consider a preferable method.
