I have my 28 gallon nano HQI tank up and running now. Looks great so far. But one problem has come up that I do not know how to solve. When the lights are on, the water temperature rises to 80 and 81 degrees. I only leave the lights on for about 8 hours, and the fan is working. What can I do to keep the water temp down? There seems to be plenty of flow.

81 is fine, i wouldnt be really concerned until you get to about 83

This.
What does it "bottom out" at? I'd watch for a large temp swing, but there's nothing wrong with 81.

+1 Tems in the low 80's are not that big a deal if the temp is only swinging between 1-2 degrees between the morning and the evening. Where you have to be careful is when the temp swing in the tank is like 5 degrees... stability is everything.

I think that the single easiest way to help with minor heat issues is to add a fan. If you have your lights sets on a time, just have the fans kick on with the lights... will drop your temp by a degree or two.

You might consider replacing the fan with a better one. You can also open the feeding hinge and allow heat to escape there.

All of the above is pretty good advice. If your temp is only getting up to 81, just set your heater to 80 so that there aren't any major swings.

Currently, it is 77-78 when the lights have been out all night...just the 4 little LED blue night lights are on. The fan automatically comes on when the light comes one. Within 1 hour the temp had moved up to 80. I put in 2 peppermint shrimp earlier this week late in the afternoon. They were dead by morning. Could the temp have done that? The coral, snails, and crabs are doing fine so far. No fish yet.

I do not have a heater in this tank. With the temp already so high, I didn't think I would need one.

Add a heater for the evening cool down. I dont think thats what killed your shrimp though.

:yay:

Unforunately finding a equilibrium with regards to temperature is something that needs to be ironed out before adding livestock. Now by adding a fan, heater.... You will have to babysit the tank for hours on end to make sure you don't swing to the opposite extreme.

One things for sure, you DO need to figure it out. As the others said, 81 is not too hot. However when summer is in full swing more than likely you will see even higher, possibly catastrophic temperatures.

Add a fan above the tank blowing down on the open back part of the tank, this will help a lot. I had to do this to keep my temp semi stable when I had my nano. I ran the fan with the lights. A heater is a must, and like Chris said leave he feeding lid open when you can.

It has now been 5 hours since I turned the lights on today. I took the feeding lid completely off...thanks Chris. I will pick up a heater tomorrow. I understand what you're saying about a fan. However, I am a little ignorant as to how to do that and what type of fan to use.

Lights are now off...temp is 82.

Just a small fan mounted to the wall above the tank in a fashion that will provide good air flow but not fall and hit the tank. Something like this I think this is an 7 or 8 inch fan.

Haha! A little pricey?

Would solve your problem though.
