I am interested in trying out a closed loop wavemaker, the 1" squid or the Tunze box. Anyone used theese things? Any feedback or suggestions. I dont want any powerheads in the tank and I already have everything I need for the closed loop.

I know it's a different animal, but I have the 3/4" SCWD on my wife's tank's returns. It does what it is supposed to do, but look at it more as a little bit of randomness in the flow, not a wavemaker.

For a closed-loop, I'd recommend an Ocean's Motion 3 or 4-way unit. They are made to last (much moreso than the SCWDs IMO).

Scwd I would use a 1" on the sump return and an OM as mentioned on the CL.

I use a 1" SCWD and it provides random flow, but not enough to sway your corals if that's what you're looking for. Also, I run a smaller return pump, so it might be different with a bigger one.

as some of the above posters have added already, don't confuse "random flow" with a "wave" I've used both methods. IMO you don't want the Tunze Wavebox. I had one and sold it within a week. Even the nano wavebox is BIG. It DOES make a very nice wave, but a standing wave just sloshes water back and forth with very little actual current. What it DOES do is keep crap off your rockwork by keeping it suspended in the water and so you can filter it out.

The other method wont provide a "wave" so to speak, but will be more valuable to your corals IMO. I think flow is one of the most overlooked aspects of our tanks. You're going to want a flow that is as B R O A D as possible. The vortechs I have to a great job of this. It isn't REALLY REALLY STRONG, but it is really really broad and moves a LOT of water around in the tank.

In summary, I would advise against the wave box, and go with a flow oriented approach. Just my to cents.

Thanks B, I have plenty of flow in there now so I think the SCWD will be perfect in the CL. It'll give me random flow. Thanks guys!

Also look into the vortek pumps. They have ALOT of different options including wave(pulse). Have you thought of using the scwd on your return and using the CL for a constant higher flow from multiple directions?
