yesterday i bought a 29 gallon cube, i bought the premixed salt water and some live sand and set it all up last night. The water is nice and clear this morning. Im gonna head up to blue planet when they open at 12:00 and get a good bit of base rock and some live rock. Also going to get a thermometer, heater, and magnetic cleaner. I was thinking about going ahead and buying a fish as well.. probably just a perc clown. They have a (small as they can find) porcupine puffer on order for me. I was told yesterday at the store that if i used the premixed salt water my tank wont even need to cycle so my tank should be ready for some life today. Im going to take a water sample just to make sure. Do you all agree that using the premixed salt water avoids the cycling process and that it will be okay to get some life today? thanks for any suggestions and/or comments.

i dont wanna say the guy at the lfs lied to you but the guy at the lfs lied to you

Matt, congrats on getting the tank, but I think you need to reconsider getting a fish so soon and getting a pufferfish at all in that small of a tank. Especially since you haven't even gotten live rock in your tank. I'd get the rock today and then leave the tank run for a week or so, let it go through the diatom stage, and then add a couple of snails after doing a complete water test. Get out a magnifying glass and just enjoy watching what comes out of the rocks. You'll see lots of interesting little creatures.

That's one of the biggest noobie mistake you'll ever make. The guy at the LFS you went to is either luring to you are he jut doesn't know what your talkin about. Ven with cured life rock and live sand. You don't want to put ANYTHING in your tank for at least 2-3 weeks.

I'm planning on breaking down one of my tank and setting up another. I'll be using all the old rock that has been in my system for over a year and movin that I to the new tank. Even so, I'm going to let it cycle for at least two weeks before I start to add fish and coral.

GOOD!! tie him up, chain him down and keep him away from a LFS for at least 3 weeks before you let him out.

Edit:

No, and I'm sure most of us here will agree as well. The beneficial bacteria do not live within the water column itself rather it lives on the surface of your rocks and sand, hence giving it the name live rock and live sand. Premixed water or not, it makes no difference.

yeah thats what i plan to do after talking to mike. i bought some live rock from him so i put that in and gonna wait til next week to get my water tested and then see where im at.

If you like puffers, have a look at the smallest toby's. The leopard toby will do ok in a biocube.

That said, they aren't 100% "reef safe", and can be aggressive towards passive fish. Definitely give the tank some time to stabilize and mature. Keep tabs on your ammonia/nitrite/nitrate over the next few weeks. Spend the time reading as much as you can.

yes.. i went in yesterday and bought five cases of the pre-mixed salt water. She said put in the water, then the sand. Wait a bit then turn the filter on. She said using the premixed salt water that the tank wouldnt have the ups and down of the cycling process, and that today i could get some liverock and a fish. I am not a newbie by any means, i kept salt water tanks successfully for several years but i got out of the hobby. Its been about 8 years or so since ive had a tank so im catching up. Back when i was keeping tanks they didnt have premixed salt water.. so thats new to me. Also, as far as keep a porcupine puffer in a 29 gallon tank.. i had one in a thirty gallon tank for two years and he was fine. Once my family moved i sold him. I realize that once he gets too big for the tank he will have to find a new home, but for now i am planning on getting the smallest one they can find. So no worries about that. I have kept an octopuss before.. successfully. She lived about 6 or 7 months until she laid her eggs and then died, as they do in the wild. So in some sense i do know what im doing, its just been a while and it seems some things have changed. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and comments. Im not going to get any fish or anything for at least a week or two. Dont worry, ill get back into the swing of things.

i know the feeling i just recently got back into sw after not having a tank for 3 years and i had to remember everything all over again lol
