Welso retracted

I purchased a Welso from the Frag Swap and it's been doing wonderfully until the past couple days. Ever since the day I brought it home it opened up fully and was eating twice a week. For the past couple days its retracted quite a bit and its tentacles aren't extended.

It still has its color but I'm just concerned. I think I've read that this might be it digesting? Any thoughts? Everything else in the DT is wonderful.

I've noticed that mine will get temperamental. Sometimes it inflates so much that it will almost lose it's color, then other times it shrinks up for a day or two.

That's comforting. Hopefully he's just fine. He hasn't lost any color at all, just retracted quite a bit is all.

After several days my Welso still has its color, but I just went to move it and it's hard as a rock. Does this mean its gone to meet his maker?

I am no expert but from the little reading I have done, even if it does die don't remove it from the tank right away. They spawn just like plates do so it a couple months you could have a ton of baby brains. Hopefully it's not gone but if so maybe there is still hope.

If it's not stark white corallites it's alive.

What's near it that might be irritating or stinging it? Think about what's immediately "upstream" from it (as your current goes).

Do you feed it meaty foods?

There's nothing near it at all. It sits in the corner all by itself. I feed it krill two times a week up until it retracted. It seemed to love where it was since the Swap.

It's got lots of color around the rim but less color towards the middle and mouth. Very vibrant reds and greens under moonlights, just hard as a rock.

It's not totally dead... but is there still tissue in the middle? I can't tell.

There seems to be color, but it's all hard. I took a look around 3am and found a peppermint shrimp standing in the middle of him. Do you think it's cleaning or eating it?

Are there any steps I can take to help it recover or is it a "wait and see" thing?

Hard to say. You could try moving it, as it may not like its location - although I don't see anything "wrong" with where it is. I'd examine it to see if the tissue is sloughing off or whatnot.

No melting at all. It's just hard like a rock but still has color as you can see. Guess we'll wait and see what happens.

Well if it was dead it would be stark white - skeleton only, with no tissue.

I can't tell about the middle of it, but it could just be very drawn up.

I just took a look and the center still as color as well. Not a lot, but there is color. Could I try feeding it or is it too drawn up to react to food?

I'd wait til evening to feed, many of those are nighttime feeders.

After almost 2 weeks my brain is making a recovery. I've had it covered in a clear plastic tomato container which has several openings for water movement. Anyway, I removed the container this afternoon and he seemed to be doing fine.

My lights went out for the night at 10pm and my two peppermints are all over him. Are the doing some house cleaning or hurting it? They seem to be pulling off some stuff but I'm not sure if its a good thing or not.

I know in my last setup... my peppermints would pick at the corals if there was issues. Like they were picking at the flesh. I would keep a close eye on them. Maybe cover it back up. If you start to see die off again I would probably do a coral dip or iodine dip. I had a problem with mine dying off as well as soon as I did the dip it started healing and came back.
