If you're looking for the 'designer name' - it's useless without a "pedigree" (record of the chain of custody).

Looks like an Oxypora sp. if you're looking for a scientific name.

Right. Much like your purebred dog will only bring purebred money without papers, a Pepto Bismol Zombie Monster that can only be ID'd visually is just a pretty coral.

Not talking down at all.... I'm only buying "LE" corals if I like them (don't care about the value), and I'll buy "mutt" or "morph" corals just as quickly if I like them.

There are some exceptions to this. I.E BPC FT, Bahama Mama, Volcano. these are extremely famous corals and the coral is unparallelled to anything else.

I'm confused... do you mean exceptions to the lineage or it isn't the real deal statement? If you mean that they are so individual-looking that there is no doubt what they are, then I guess that is left up to the buyer.

I don't mind "named" corals, but IMO very few can be traced back to the original mother colony.

Even then, I think the whole named/LE deal is sort of a sham. For example, we had a cool looking chalice at the frag meeting that was given away. It was certainly better looking than some known, named ones that are out there. Since it was collected and sold/donated to the club (I don't know which), it is just a cool looking chalice. If it were collected and sold to Tyree or Fox, it would have a name made up for it and be sold at a premium. Is it different because of who ended up with it? Nope.

Not taking issue with you, mind you, just clarifying.

Honestly all coral have one origin, the ocean. So that makes no different in it's "true" lineage. BUt some coral have such unique pattern and coloration, most people wont even request a lineage when a picture is provided. This goes for any coral, not just chalice.
