What is this stuff growing in my sump?

Still new so don't laugh....

After getting some good advice on the source of my nitrates problem I decided to clean my sump out. First time I have done this. I took my rubble out and got rid of the sand. While everything was out I noticed I had lots of these little things that were growing in the bubble trap and in the rubble section.

This explains the stuff that would show up in my tank when I was cleaning it.

So more my question is, what is it and how do I get rid of it. Here are the best pictures I can get.

Sponge, good for filtering water

That is a sponge? Or you are saying I should add a sponge in there to catch these?

If those are sponges then I should just let them grow?
