I have this live rock in a QT tank waiting to move it over to my 90 gallon when it gets set up. I know it has hair algae on it, which I am going to scrub off before moving it over. My question is about the white stuff that has popped up on it today. Any idea on what this stuff is? It's only on this one rock.

Looks like a dead sponge. Probably from being exposed to air while moving the rock.

+1. I would NEVER knowingly put any rock in my tank with any kind of algae on it. It is hard enough to avoid without introducing it yourself.

Having been the previous owner of the rock, thats definitely a dead/dying sponge. I can tell by the yellow polyps near the white stuff. Smell good?

So what do I do before putting this into the tank? I don't understand why it would be dying off because I have kept it in the QT tank with a biowheel filter and a heater. Is is just cycling again?

With that particular rock you can do what the others have said and dry it and bleach it... or let it QT for a few more weeks I'd guess. The sponge probably died from a more prolonged period of being exposed to air during the move.

With the sponge dying, all of the rock is cycling again.
