I grabbed this SPS from the only store we have in augusta left, in part because it was relatively cheap (35$) and because it was white, which struck me as unique. The Saltwater guy there called it a "tri-color" and I bought it.

Well, fast forward two weeks and it barely has polyp extension (they are bright yellow) and is turning slightly brown from the base up (the one left in the store has completely turned a brownish color).

Did I buy a bleached, unhealthy SPS? Or is this a known coral that may just be unhappy? All the rest of my SPS are doing great.

any ideas?

A tricolor SPS is a true named coral...but it ain't white. What kind of lighting do you have and what kind of flow is it in? Try and stick with buying only healthy specimens from reputable stores. I know Augusta doesn't have many stores and the pickings are slim but, I wouldn't want to pay $35 for a coral skeleton from anyone regardless.

I have 2 250 Halides. And 4 Koralias with a Maxi Jet for flow on a wavemaker. Like I said, the other SPS are happy, and I'm USUALLY pretty good at picking healthy corals and keeping em happy.:lol2:

I won't make the same mistake twice in this hobby:thumbs:

ive sean a trind in death in marineculterd sps over the past few months usuly they eather bleach or rtn'stn not shure if its a problem with long delay in shipping or the geen seed is just dieing off but 8/8 mc.acro. i have bought 4were from local atl shops and 4 were from difrent online shops have turned south in a few days all other sps/lps have ben helthy gess winter is a bad time for acros

I got white zoanthids for free because they were bleached and would never sell... I just thought they looked cool.

You purchased a bleached coral. I can't believe a store would sell you that with a straight face.

Yea, they did. I think I'll either purchase from Liveaquaria and other online vendors or travel to Atlanta to shop.

I moved it down to low light and it's slowly getting polyp extension and turning a brownish color and gaining back its health. Most agreed on RC that it's not a goner, but it will need some TLC. haha.

The fact that it is showing some PE and starting to regain some color is good. If it is recovering in your tank, it should continue to do so. That store needs a reality check.

As long as it is still alive it can come back, so don't dump it. It could come back and be a very nice acro. You may find that your $35 will ultimately get you a nicely colored coral. But the LFS should be ashamed for not telling you it was bleached.

On the bright side there was a little acro crab hitchhiker hanging out in it. (He still hasn't abandoned ship)

Its a shame what some stores will try to pull on the innocent that don't know any better. I wen't into a store near my that I have not been into in months since I bought a couple of fish from them that died all within a week when my system was running fine. Anyway they had red algae all over the tank and had told me it was coraline. Me not knowing any better took it for what it was worth and thought cool there systems are well "aged" until I was properly educated to realize this was not the case.

Its a good thing if its getting good polyp extension
